ONE OF 170: Beautifully Maintained Saab SPG

spg1990

Very rare 1990 SPG. Car is in immacculate condition. It has been meticulously maintained by the saab dealer or saab only independent shops. It has all of the options including leather, sunroof, heated seats, power windows, ice cold air conditioning and 2 of the original saab remotes that still work. We are the second owner and have had it since 1995. I do have a very complete service file and just spent over $800 last week at EOS saab here in boulder on service. It was sold new here in Colorado and spent its entire life here (no rust). It has always been garaged and waxed regularly. We have only used top of the line synthetic fluids. It has never been wrecked or abused. We are saab enthusiasts and do own a 900 convertible and a 9000 aero. The interior is immaculate and has had Hide food leather treatment regularly. The stereo has also been upgraded and sounds great. The car needs NOTHING and it has no leaks. It is all original (except stereo) and has never been modified. There were only 170 black spg’s made in 1990. Runs and drives perfectly. The exterior is in excellent condition and there is no damage or rust even the front spoiler is perfect. The tires have about 90% remaining and it comes with a second set of saab wheels with snow tires that have about 70% remaining. Willing to consider a trade for an 05 or newer 9-5 aero with a manual transmission in similar condition.

ALMOST DONE: 80% Restored SAAB 99 Turbo

sabb99

This CA car has undergone a complete mechanical restoration of motor and trans including a rebuilt 5 speed trans upgrade from 4 speed. The total cost to me for this by the Swedish auto works in Santa Clara was over $13,000.00 There is less than a thousand miles since this work completed. Beyond this, the upholstery was redone in original fabric looking factory new in every way. Most recent work last year was a fuel pump rebuild. The only remaining action is a repaint and you are there. Unfortunately, moving forces the sale. Car is located in CA and if delivery needed I have a car trailer. The car is currently on a Non Op. Any questions and or concern, feel free to contact me via  contact info below.

SWEDE AS CAN BE: 20,000-Mile SAAB 99 EMS

1

S/N 99777001700 Just ticked over 20,000 miles on the way to Saabs at Carlisle last weekend. As close to a new 99 as you will ever find. Yes, it was assembled in Belgium, so it’s not perfect. Everything works, including dealer installed A/C. Refinished wheels. We have 2 old Saabs and a daughter going to grad school, so this one has to go. Serviced at Sports Car Service in Wilmington, DE in April. Pictures on Flickr.

PICK OF THE DAY: Low-milage Saab Sonett “Survivor”

00v0v_d27aBo2n9gc_600x450

When a company is “born from jets,” it’s only a matter of time that it should divert slightly from its people’s car roots into something more sporting. Almost immediately following the first passenger Saab, the 92’s, introduction, it made its way into rallying and some years later a car that was aimed at road racing circuits was launched, to compete with the likes of Alfa Romeo, Jaguar and Porsche. This was the Saab Sonett I. While only six copies of the Sonett I were introduced, the idea that Saab was aptly capable of doing so was kept in the back of the minds of both engineers. A decade or so after the Sonett I was introduced, bolstered by further success in rallying, the Sonett II was launched and made its way into regular production. Though somewhat less ambitious than its predecessor, the Sonett II proved successful in its class, against Triumphs and MGs, among others. In short it was a bona fide sports car. By the third and final iteration, the Sonett III could’ve been mistaken for something out of Italy, owing to its design rooted in Sergio Coggiola’s pen. Its sleek (0.31 Cx), lightweight (under 900 kg), fiberglass body mated to a Ford V4 motor pulled the little car by its front wheels with respectable performance whist not compromising on the cornerstone Saab traits of safety and economy. This example comes from one if its last years of production, 1972, which is also the last year before being burdened with cumbersome bumpers per US safety standards. It is said to be a survivor though it has had a repaint, been reupholstered, refinished soccer balls, and the stock Autolite carburetor was replaced with a Weber. Ok, so it’s not a textbook ”survivor.” Neverthelss, it is an original 42,000-mileage example that’s been documented since purchase. It presents extraordinarily well and likely is a blast to drive.  Find it here on Craigslist in Springfield VA from a motivated seller for $13,900 or best offer.

PICK OF THE DAY: Sterling 76,000 Mile Saab 99 EMS

1

Before the Saab 99 even went out of production after a 16-year run, it was already a classic. Earlier Saabs, like the 92,93, 95, and 96 built a following for their advances in engineering , safety, toughness, and aerodynamics. Later Saabs like the 900 would be more sophisticated and offer more creature comforts around the same basic shape, but it was the 99 that cemented Saab’s place in the automotive landscape. It was built like a tank, yet agile and peppy; practical yet quirky; a people’s car but not mainstream. With the 99 EMS, performance and handling were dialed up a notch with a fuel-injected 2.0 litre developing 108 hp, along with quicker steering, stiffer suspension, front air dam, and the now-iconic “soccer ball” wheels. With most 99s lasting a half million miles or more, this 76,000-mile EMS looks to have benefited from spare driving not only mechanically, but as a long-time Florida car, it retains a well-preserved, rust-free Sterling Silver body and tidy interior as well. With a great deal of recent service, it promises to be as loyal as its next owner will be to it and the Saab story yet to be told. Find it here on the Saabnet Classifieds for a very reasonable $4,800

PICK OF THE DAY: 75,000 Mile Saab 900 Turbo

00n0n_eXr8F1wjXn0_600x450

Long live Saab, particularly the pre-GM swoosh-back 900s and earlier. Saabs have always enjoyed a loyalist following and the appreciation for what some consider the real Saabs continues to grow and values are beginning to reflect that. Motors, while finicky, are built to last a quarter million miles and often more before even considering a rebuild. Therefore it’s not unusual to find a quality Saab 900 with 150,000 miles or more fetching $5,000 or more. This 900 Turbo has just over half those miles at just over half that asking price. Despite poor photos, the car looks to be in excellent condition and is said to have been garaged. Its Edwardian Gray paint appears to be free of rust or oxidation. The handsome Burgundy Red interior looks like it shows some typical wear on the drivers seat bolster, but there are no splits in the seams, which is unusual. Headliner isn’t visible in photos. Without question worth further investigation for anyone who appreciates a solidly built, fun-to-drive, practical, durable, and quirky bit of sub-culture. Find it here on Craigslist in Mundelien IL for a possibly too-good-to-be-true $2,600.

PICK OF THE DAY: Refreshed Low-Mile Saab 99 GL

$_57-3

Saab was always a company that did things differently and to anyone who’s owned one, those differences forged a relationship like few other cars can match. From its beginnings as an automaker in the late ‘40s (spawned from an aircraft company), the cars evoked a palpable personality, instantly engaging their owners. Unfortunately, when you own not just a car, but the entire company—namely you are GM (Saab was a wholly-owned subsidiary since 2000)—doing things differently doesn’t have the same level of charm. The “overthinking” that went into even the latest cars proved too costly and simply did not meet fiscal expectations. For a brief time, Saab was saved by exotic automaker, Spyker, only for Spyker to face bankruptcy themselves months later. Sale of its Saab division was blocked by former owner GM and Saab, as we knew it for over 55 years, breathed its last breath, although a non-breathing all-electric car based on the last Saab 9-3 is said to be in production, though no details have been announced on when and where the car will be available.  In the meantime, we have the used Saab market to play with. Fortunately, the cars were not only innovative, but made to last and there are hundreds on the market at any given time, with continued parts availability. To clarify, by “made to last,” they are durable (rally proven), but not necessarily reliable. The quirkiness that makes them so lovable also makes them finicky and temperamental at times. They key, as with any other car, is to find one that has been well cared for. That may seem obvious—and it is—but because Saabs were well-thought out and well-made, their flaws can be covered up. As a car that has any residual value, it’s probably best to avoid any GM-era cars (2000-2012). The cars that are seeing some appreciation are the early cars, most definitely the 92, 93, 95 and 96. The Saab 99, too, is enjoying some healthy growth, due in part to being more advanced than its predecessors in the first place and that refreshed and restored examples are increasingly coming onto the market.  They also have a look that’s fast becoming iconic: the arched tail (whether in coupé or Wagonback form), the curvaceous front fender line and the four headlamp nose (this was US only but expatriated in European markets) are an aesthetic that is like nothing else on the road. This example has had a high-quality restoration in 2011, comprising of new paint in its lovely Alpine White, and a new interior. The motor is said to be original with only the occasional drip or two. The Inca wheels complete the Saab look while its original steel wheels and chrome hubcaps are included in the sale. The seller discloses the odometer stopped working at just over 55,000 miles in 2012, but estimates another 10,000 miles since. In any case, that is not much for a car that can easily go half a million with proper care. Find it here on The Saab Network Classifieds in Charlotteville VA for $5,900.

PICK OF THE DAY: Single-Family 1970 Saab 95 Wagon with Under 27,000 Miles

sw_8001970 Saab 95 Wagon. Let’s start with the fact this car has been in the family since new, NOT to speak of the mileage on this car is what you see on the odometer.  Yes, that’s right, only 26,692 miles.  The car was traded in to Eldon Vories Motors at some point in time in the early to mid 80’s.  Does that name ring a bell?  It should, that was my family’s business of which I was a partner.  This Saab 95 was then taken to be my father’s driver and was towed behind their motor coach as a driver when they arrived at their destination.  It was used in this capacity for more years than I can count.  When my father passed away in the mid 90’s, my mother kept it as a 2nd driver to take to her cabin in the mountains.  Just this evening she informed me it was time to say goodbye to this family icon.In 2008, my mother spent almost $3000 to make sure everything was done to make it safe and road worthy.  The auto repair shop’s owner was very familiar with this car because he used to work for EVM’s and worked on this car.  The list is very long of all things that were done and is available at the end of the photos of this car.  New tires were put on the car and it would really make a good driver for someone OR, it could be restored to be a number 1 quite easily, as everything is there.  If I could find some of the old photos of the car behind the motor coach, I would, in fact I will go on a mission to find them.

The original owner’s really loved the car and it was their family car for many years.  They kept is serviced by factory specs and a person would always see it running all over the Walla Walla Valley.  It will even be sad for me to see the car go away.  But I am sure there is a Saab Lover out there that will take good care of this classic.
