ZURICH (October 7, 2024) – Bonhams is excited to offer, for charity, the IWC Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team (reference IW38830, circa 2024), worn on the podium by legendary British Formula One™ driver and IWC Schaffhausen ambassador Lewis Hamilton after his record-breaking ninth win at the 2024 Silverstone Grand Prix.
This exclusive online auction, featuring the watch and a framed pair of signed racing gloves, is now live and will conclude on 19 October, coinciding with The Laureus Charity Night in Zurich.
Throughout his career spanning over 20 years, Lewis Hamilton has accomplished more than any other driver could hope for. He has secured seven Formula One World Drivers’ Championship titles and holds the records for the most wins (105), pole positions (104), and podium finishes (201). However, one of the most significant wins of Hamilton’s entire career may be his recent triumph at the iconic Silverstone circuit. By achieving a record-breaking ninth British Grand Prix™ win, Hamilton became the first driver to win a Grand Prix race in 16 different seasons and the first to win a Grand Prix after making 300 starts. His Silverstone victory marked his 12th consecutive British Grand Prix™ podium and his 150th podium with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ team.
The victory at Silverstone was even more meaningful because Hamilton had been denied a first place finish in the two previous seasons. Upon crossing the finish line, he felt immense relief, and his emotions were heartfelt. He expressed his gratitude on Instagram: “It has been 945 days since the last win, and it has finally come home. SILVERSTONE, I LOVE YOU. There’s no crowd that deserves this more. This is love, this is family. Thank you all for the love and support.”
When Hamilton held up the trophy on the podium, he was wearing the Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team. This unique watch is now available for bidding, offering you the chance to own a piece of motorsport history that is charged with emotion like no other. In addition to the watch, there are also the original racing gloves that Lewis Hamilton wore during his legendary drive at Silverstone – signed by the champion himself, and donated by the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One™ team.
The chronograph features a 41-millimetre case, crown and case back ring made of Ceratanium®. This IWC-developed lightweight material is based on a special titanium alloy. It combines the lightness and structural integrity of titanium with a hardness and scratch resistance similar to ceramic. An outstanding functional feature is the ceramic bezel with a tachymeter scale. Matching the polished bezel, the watch features a black dial with a glossy finish. The recessed totalizers, hands, applied indices, and numerals in blackened nickel, filled with Super-LumiNova®, ensure excellent nighttime readability.
The Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team is powered by the IWC-manufactured 69385 calibre. This chronograph movement consists of 242 parts and is visible through the tinted sapphire glass case back. Its bi-directional pawl winding system builds up a power reserve of 46 hours in the mainspring. The chronograph features the IWC-typical vertical subdial layout. The minutes are displayed at 12 o’clock, enhancing readability. The watch is fitted with a durable and waterproof black rubber strap with a Ceratanium® pin buckle.
