PICK OF THE DAY: One-Owner 1974 Mazda RX-3

As the listing says, it’s not every day a one-owner RX-3s comes available. And while scarce (among other things) is the the kid who had a poster of one on their bedroom wall, the RX-3 does hold a small spot in automotive history. It was a good seller for Mazda in its time, which not only helped the automaker get a foothold in the US market, but exposed car buyers to the term “Wankel rotary engine.” Both factors helped to pave the way for the RX-7 and the rest is history. If that holds any meaning, then a one-owner example with original books, window sticker, and less than 75,000 original miles isn’t a bad way to go. Find it here on Craigslist for the price of a new Mazda3 at $26,999.

IN THE NEWS: Lotus Unveils 75th Anniverssry Branding

Hethel UK, 20 December 2022 – In 1948 a passionate young British designer and engineer called Colin Chapman built his first car, a modified Austin 7. Work was carried out in his spare time in the lock-up garage belonging to his girlfriend Hazel’s parents, behind their house in Hornsey, London. He called his car the Mark I and entered it into local trials. Different models followed, each an improvement on the one before, and within four years it became a business that he and Hazel called Lotus. Continue reading

PICK OF THE DAY: 1999 Renault Sport Spider

Upon its launch in 1996, the Renault Sport Spider was intended to be a race car for the road. Its light weight (2,050 lbs), aluminum chassis, and integrated drivetrain turned the 148-hp 16-valve 2.0-liter four-potter into an engaging driving machine. Not many were made in the four-year run (~1,800 from 1996 through 1999). They were forbidden fruit for us in the States but a few made it over under the Show-and-Display exemption. It’s unclear if this car is one of those but the seller states that it came to them from long-time stewardship in a California collection. The very low miles (1,650) would support a Show-and Display status, though it reportedly underwent an extensive refresh to allow for its next owner, should they so choose, to use it as intended: drive it with Gaelic grin. Find it here on Craigslist for less than a driver-quality Lotus Elise at $49,999.

IN THE NEWS: Subaru BRZ Named One of Car and Driver’s 10 Best for Second Year Running

Subaru of America, Inc. today announced that the 2023 Subaru BRZ was awarded a place on Car and Driver’s annual 10Best list for the second consecutive year.

Car and Driver awarded BRZ for embracing the concept of “enough”, drawing attention to the space left unfilled by extra pounds and a daunting monthly payment.

“The car is utterly wonderful – it’s light, sharp, unfiltered, and inexpensive, states Car and Driver. “Long may it remain so. We don’t need anything more.”

The 10Best Cars nominees consist of all-new vehicles, 2022 10Best winners, cars that were not available for the 2022 competition and those with significant updates. All must fall under the base-price cap of $110,000 and be on sale no later than January 31, 2023. After a week of driving every new car that meets those criteria, the editors voted on a scale from zero to 100, discarded the high and low votes, and averaged the remaining scores to arrive at the 10Best Cars of 2023.

Car and Driver is a legendary automotive publication, and we are honored that their experts again recognized the performance and value of the second generation BRZ,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and CEO, Subaru of America, Inc. “This accolade helps solidify our goal of providing customers with a pure sports car embedded with Subaru DNA.”

The 2023 BRZ is powered by a 2.4-liter (naturally aspirated) 228 hp SUBARU BOXER® engine paired with a six-speed close-ratio manual transmission or a six-speed electronic direct-control automatic transmission. Available now at Subaru retailers nationwide, the second-generation BRZ is offered in two trim levels, Premium and Limited, and has a starting price of $28,595.

Full coverage of the Car and Driver 10Best Cars can be found in the January issue, available everywhere by December 27, and online at CarandDriver.com.

PICK OF THE DAY: Honest 1971 FJ40 Survivor at a Reasonable Price

It’s not often that we come across mostly original, mostly solid Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40s with 80,000 miles on the original motor. When we do, it’s typically through an auction house or site where the price typically climbs well over 50 grand. But this one from 1971 appears to be a genuine, well-kept survivor. Even as the FJ40 has taken a back seat to early Broncos over the past few years, this one stands out as a relative bargain. It’s here on Craigslist for $29,000.
