AT THE MUSEUM: Arsham Auto Motive Exhibition at the Petersen

LOS ANGELES (Feb. 2, 2023) – The automotive and art scenes will converge with the Petersen Automotive Museum’s new exhibition “Arsham Auto Motive”, a collection of vehicle sculptures and posters created by renowned interdisciplinary artist Daniel Arsham.

Opening to the public on February 25 in the Armand Hammer Foundation Gallery, this contemporary showcase will provide a time capsule of automotive history.  Arsham’s personal passion for cars and fascination with archeology takes form through the presentation of four full-scale vehicles in his signature “eroded” fictional archeological technique.

Daniel Arsham crafts objects which investigate ideas of history, symbology and pop culture through the selection of vehicles featured in notable Hollywood films. Presented in geological materials, these familiar objects act as remnants of the present through the eyes of future audiences, providing an alternative lens to some of the world’s most prominent OEMs.

On display in “Arsham Auto Motive” are the Eroded 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback, 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster, 2018 Eroded Ferrari and 2022 Blue Calcite Eroded Porsche 911. Unlike their namesakes, these sculptures consist of elements like selenite, quartz, pyrite and volcanic ash to manifest an unearthed effect. Additional exhibit highlights are the never-before-seen Selenite Eroded BMW Poster, Amethyst Eroded Porsche 911 Poster, and Ash and Pyrite Eroded Mustang Poster.

“I’m excited to share my work with the city of Los Angeles and its vast community of car enthusiasts. Automotive design is in a constant state of evolution and this exhibition strives to reflect both its origins and future.”

Daniel Arsham, artist

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, and a recipient of the Gelman Trust Fellowship Award in 2003, Arsham’s fictional archeology aesthetic combines the influence of multiple eras and spans sculpture, architecture, interior design, drawing, film, stage and fashion. In addition to his work exhibited throughout the U.S., France, UK and Greece, Arsham co-founded the architecture practice Snarkitecture with Alex Mustonen and recently launched his fashion brand, Objects IV Life, following high-profile collaborations with Dior, Adidas, Tiffany, UNIQLO and RIMOWA.

“Having previously exhibited Keith Haring and Andy Warhol’s work, it is evident that pop culture and the automotive sector make for an exciting, crowd-pleasing combination. Daniel Arsham’s talent makes a strong case that cars can inspire artistic creations while also serving as art pieces themselves.”

Terry L. Karges, Petersen Automotive Museum Executive Director

Arsham and the museum will also release an exclusive line of merchandise available for purchase at the Petersen and via their online store. “Arsham Auto Motive” is supported by Perrotin and the Library Street Collective.

23 FOR 23 FOR UNDER 23: 1973 – 1980 Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC

$19,750 – 22,500
Collector status: Buy and hold

The Mercedes-Benz SLC has always been a bit of an odd duck. It was designed to fill the spot being vacated by the W111 coupé, but rather than base it on the S-Class, as previous coupés had been it was a derivative of the R107 SL roadster. It was, and remains, the only time that Mercedes-Benz would not base its “personal luxury coupé” on its flagship sedan.

To the rear edge of its doors, it is identical to the SL but then gets stretched 14 inches to accommodate a “functional” rear seat. To eyes accustomed to the much more common roadster (over three times as many produced), the proportions seem off. But taken on its own, the design has some merit. Its more upright roofline, complemented by the lovely louvers between the C-pillar and rear quarter glass, are in keeping with the language of the late 60s and early 70s. When taken from certain angles, the width of the R107/C107 suits the larger appearance of the coupé.

Power comes from the same 4.5-liter V8 as in the roadster, rather unfortunately bogged down by US emissions to a sluggish 160 hp (down more than 50 from its RoW counterpart). This was the only motor offered in the SLC through Mercedes-Benz North America dealers. However a few gray-market examples of the much more impressive 237-hp 500 SLC (made between 1979 and 1981) turn up now and then on auction sites. With the 5.0-liter V8 under the bonnet, the SLC in fact enjoyed a brief but successful rallying stint. While it is a long way from the ancestry found in the legendary 300 SL, it demonstrated that the SLC can be capable of more sporting performance than its “personal luxury” denotes.

The idea of a four-seat hardtop 107 never really resonated with buyers, who didn’t seem to mind two-seats (or opted for the mostly unusable kinderseat) in favor of wind-in-the-hair motoring. Mercedes-Benz took note and with the 126-S-Class, returned to the big-bodied coupé that continued through to the C217 of the last generation. But that also means that they can be overlooked in the collector market as well. With their roadster counterparts regularly selling at over $25,000 and climbing (some low-mileage 560s approaching Pagoda money), the SLC lurks as a potential bargain.

ON THE ROAD: Entries Open for Second Edition of Sorrento Roads by Mille Miglia

Entries are open for the 2023 edition of Sorrento Roads by 1000 Miglia. The spring event scheduled to take place from March 30 to April 2 will offer a small number of participants the chance to immerse themselves in one of the world’s most envied Mediterranean landscapes.

Like last year, Sorrento will be the core of the event: from here, in fact, Friday, March 31 will kick off the “on the road” day that will take the participating cars to discover first the Royal Palace of Caserta and then the Amalfi Coast. The day of Saturday, April 1, on the other hand, will take place entirely in the center of Sorrento. Modern and classic cars built up to 1990 can be entered. Eligible cars, the entry fee and all information are available here or by writing to participants@1000miglia.it

PICK OF THE DAY: One Owner 1984 Saab 900 Turbo

This 1984 Saab 900 Turbo was bought new in 1984 and has covered less than 97,500 miles by a single owner in that time. Despite some minor needs (slight bubbling behind wheel wells, typical tear in driver’s seat bolster), it appears to have been well cared for. It includes the original window sticker as well as maintenance records. It presents well in its glossy black over tan with the 15-inch Panaracers. It’s an eight-valve so it won’t bring the kind of money we’re seeing with the later 16Vs, but at $9,500 it’s still sure to offer plenty of smiles per mile. Find it here on the Saabnet Classifieds.
