PICK OF THE DAY: All Original 61K-Mile 1994 Toyota 4×4 Pickup

Okay, Toyota made a million 4×4 pickups (or Hilux elsewhere in the world) and a good portion of them ended up on these shores. But finding a decent pre-Tacoma one, well, that’s not so easy. Most owners took advantage of their bombproof reliability and drove them to their dying day. Others succumbed to rust and a few more got chopped, bagged and otherwise modded. So coming across an all-original fifth-generation (fourth in the US), low-mileage extended cab with minimal flaws deserves a closer look.

This one comes from 1994, the last full year of production (which ceased partly through 1995, replaced that same year with the Tacoma). It has the preferred drivetrain of the 3.0-liter V6 and 5-speed manual. While not the more sought after SR5, it is a Deluxe, with standard AC (reportedly working), cruise control, and AM/FM stereo (factory unit still in tact).

The previous two generations of the 4×4 Pickup have seen impressive gains in value with the fourth gen (aka Marty McFly) being named to Hagerty’s Bull Market list for 2023. There’s no reason to think that the 1989 to 1995 models, kept in the condition this one is, won’t follow suit. Either way, it’s a great little truck. The owner is asking $25,000 but open to offers. It’s listed here (and elsewhere) on Craigslist.

23 FOR 23 FOR UNDER 23: 1991-1999 Toyota MR2 Mk II

$18,250 – 22,800

Another Toyota that captured attention for its aesthetics is the second-generation MR2. This time it borrowed design queues from the Ferrari V8 cars, in particular the 348 TS (though today it more closely resembles the F355 GTS, which would arrive midway through the MR2’s lifespan). From its inception, the MR2 was designed to be a run-about (Mid-ship Run-about/Rear-wheel-drive 2-seater), offering good fuel economy in a youthful package. But with its relative light weight and mid-engine layout, it couldn’t help its aspirations as a sports car, especially with noted figures like Dsn Gurney helping to tune its handling. The turbocharged models of the MK II were the performance stars, with 200 bhp on tap, but the 130-hp 2.2-liter 5S-FE offers plenty of fun for $20,000 less in today’s market.

PICK OF THE DAY: Honest 1971 FJ40 Survivor at a Reasonable Price

It’s not often that we come across mostly original, mostly solid Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40s with 80,000 miles on the original motor. When we do, it’s typically through an auction house or site where the price typically climbs well over 50 grand. But this one from 1971 appears to be a genuine, well-kept survivor. Even as the FJ40 has taken a back seat to early Broncos over the past few years, this one stands out as a relative bargain. It’s here on Craigslist for $29,000.
