IN CLASSICS: Mercedes-Benz Classic Index Shows Steady Progression in Values

280SE 3.5
Classic Mercedes-Benz models perform as strongly in the market as they do on the road, according to an international research organisation that has just released the first ever index to comprehensively measure the brand’s value progression.

The Mercedes-Benz Classic Index (MBCI), created by classic car market research company The Historic Automobile Group International (HAGI), gained 11.65% in 2012. Moreover, a market back-test to 1980 reveals a solid annual average growth rate of nearly 9%.

The MBCI, which is supported by Mercedes-Benz Classic, the manufacturer’s heritage division, is the culmination of the most comprehensive research programme ever conducted into classic Mercedes-Benz value growth.

HAGI has selected 29 different Mercedes-Benz models to provide the yard-stick for market performance. The MBCI uses only authenticated transactions and only vehicles confirmed to be in first-class condition. The value of each model in the database has been charted from the price when new, through the depreciation J-curve and upwards to the present in classic afterlife.

Models incorporated into the index range from immortal pre-war models such as the S, SSK and 540K to sports models of the early 1980s. Among rarer prestige models of the 1950s, the legendary 300SL Gull-wing and Roadster are a considerable force in the market place. For the 1960s and 1970s index models include the exclusive 280 SE 3.5 coupe and cabriolet, along with the hugely successful “Pagoda” SL 230/250/280 sporting convertibles.

“While rarer Mercedes models number among some of the most valuable and desirable cars in the world, our research also shows that the benefits of solid appreciation are also enjoyed by mainstream Mercedes classic models,” said Dietrich Hatlapa, HAGI founder.

HAGI has undertaken in-depth research to ensure the index constituents are truly representative of the overall Mercedes-Benz classic portfolio. This process has been conducted entirely independently of Mercedes-Benz, which has had no influence on or input into index design. The MBCI applies the same rules as traditional stock market indexes.

To keep abreast of market developments HAGI has created a “watch list” of “Emerging Classics” such as the 300 SEL 6.3, 450 SEL 6.9, 190 Evo II or 500 E. This segment, although not in the index, is being kept under special observation and is being monitored for future development and potential inclusion as the market evolves.

The MBCI comprises more than 24,500 vehicles, based on survivor numbers, giving a market index capitalization of more than £4 billion ($6.6 billion).

The MBCI is one of five indices created by The Historic Automobile Group International. The others are: the HAGI TOP index, a representative measure of 50 rare classic cars; the HAGI F historic Ferrari index; the HAGI-P historic Porsche index; and the HAGI EX-P & F index, which provides a measure excluding the Porsche and Ferrari components. Indices have been live for more than four years.

IN HONOR OF AN ICON: Mercedes-Benz Pagoda Turns 50

Pagoda
Montvale, NJ and Amelia Island, Florida – Florida’s sunny weather is creating the perfect back-drop to honor the 50th anniversary of the famed Mercedes-Benz “Pagoda,” SL which takes center stage during this week’s Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, March 8-10, 2013.

The launch of the Mercedes-Benz 230 SL at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1963 caused quite a sensation. Mercedes-Benz had presented the motoring world with this single successor to the extremely successful 300 SL (W198) and 190 SL (W121).

The Daimler-Benz design team and particularly designer Paul Bracq produced a two-seater Coupe/Roadster, known internally as the W113, with a distinct contemporary flair which set new benchmarks for handling and safety. The sweeping curve of the W113’s hardtop inspired enthusiasts to nickname this model the “Pagoda” SL. These design characteristics served practical purposes as well as providing safety benefits. The inward curvature of the removable hardtop roof improved outward visibility, ingress/egress while increasing the roof’s rigidity and lowering the overall weight.

The 230 SL was the first sports car in the world to incorporate safety features in the body structure, which contained a rigid passenger compartment with crumple zones both front and rear. The safety engineering of the W 113 were reflective of the ideas developed by Daimler-Benz Chief Safety Engineer Béla Barényi with respect to passive safety integration within automotive body shells.

“The Pagoda was the first Mercedes-Benz SL that combined sports car characteristics with elements of today’s modern luxury roadster,” said Mike Kunz, manager of the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Irvine, CA. “For a first time collector, the Pagoda is great car to own, maintain and restore. It can be driven in a sporting manner, but is just as happy as a comfortable cruiser. Lately, it has become very fashionable and we are forecasting that its popularity will continue to grow.”

The Mercedes-Benz Classic Center has restored and provided maintenance for many vintage Pagoda-series SLs. Recent efforts have included benchmark, high-end restorations which have moved the Pagoda into the premium collector car arena.

During the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, the Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge is featuring three iconic vehicles representing fascinating convertible design of the past and present, capturing the true essence of top down driving. The display includes a Mercedes-Benz 1968 280 SL, a 1956 220 S Cabriolet (both restored by the Classic Center) and a 2013 SL65 AMG with V-12 bi-turbo hand built engine that produces 621 hp and capable of zero to 60 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds.

A Sports Car Born from Sedan Engineering: The technical basis of the 230 SL Roadster was provided by the Mercedes-Benz 220 SE (W111) luxury-class “fintail” sedan including its shortened and reinforced frame floor as well as its front and rear suspension. The engine in the 220 SE also formed the basis for the development of the 2.3 liter 150 hp M127 six-cylinder in-line engine which was fitted to the new SL when it launched in 1963. It was also the first time an SL was available with an optional four-speed automatic transmission.

Towards the end of 1966, the 230 SL was succeeded by the 250 SL. Its six-cylinder in-line engine (M129) also had an output of 150 hp but generated 10 per cent more torque. This meant that the vehicle could accelerate to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 10 seconds which was 1.1 seconds faster than the 230 SL. The top speed of both the 230 SL and the 250 SL was 125 mph.

Finally, in 1968, the 280 SL with engine M130 became the third and last version of the W113 model series to enter the market. Its 2,778 cc six-cylinder in-line engine developed 170 hp and could accelerate the sports car from a standstill to 62 mph in 9 seconds. The top speed remained at 125 mph, still a very respectable figure for this era.

The three SL models that made up the W113 model series were available as a Roadster with folding soft top, as a Coupé with a removable hardtop and occasional use rear jump seat often referred to as a “California Roadster” and its most common variant, a Coupé with both a removable hardtop and folding Roadster soft top.

Production of the W113 ended in March 1971 with 48,912 units to its credit. The completely redesigned successor model series R107 took over from the technically and stylistically trailblazing “Pagoda” – and went on to set new benchmarks for luxury sports roadsters.

THE EVOLUTION OF AN AUTOMOTIVE ICON Since its introduction in 1954, the Mercedes-Benz SL has been the embodiment of a lifestyle that evoked a certain status in life while still being able to enjoy it. Borne of a racing pedigree, yet sophisticated and opulent, they are the cars of the stars and the country club set. In 2003, Mercedes once again set a new standard for sports luxury automobiles with the R230. Its styling, performance and refinement drew accolades from both the press and public. Road & Track deemed it “a true benchmark automobile” and nearly a decade later, it remains one of the more stunning, scintillating, technologically advanced, luxury automobiles on the road. The SL500 presented here is a near pristine, impeccably maintained, beautiful driving example that’s covered just over 29,000 miles in that decade by one meticulous owner from Sarasota. Its pampering is evident in every aspect. The paint and finish are near perfect, with only one small chip on the rear right wheel arch and a tiny nick in the front bumper (pictured). No other chips, scratches, or dings. There was a very low speed impact that was repaired by a Mercedes-Benz authorized body shop to factory specifications (the car contacted a pillar while backing out of the garage; the cosmetic damage was very light but the retractable hardtop, hydraulics and mechanics had to be replaced. The good news is that is all factory fresh). The interior is near perfect. The materials are flawless in their finish. Leather shows no wear or discoloring, wood trim is lustrous and rich, carpets are pristine. All controls work properly with cold AC, smooth window and seat operation in all directions. The top (as one might expect from factory fresh mechanics) retracts and raises seamlessly. There’s no pixel fade in the instruments and no stickiness to any of the buttons. The drivetrain is solid and smooth. There are no leaks, smoke, or unusual noises. Its tenacious maintenance over the years has assured that. Braking is typical Mercedes, that is to say legendary. Ride is silky but handling is surprisingly crisp. 18″ AMG wheels are bright, clean and show zero curb rash. They are shod with Michelin Pilots that retain 80% tread. This is without question one of the finest examples of one of the finest automobiles ever made.

Beyond the cars themselves which often steal the show, one event that rises above is the annual exclusive Mercedes-Benz gala dinner at the Beach Club, which will honor car collector Mr. Arturo Keller with its coveted Star Driver Award. Past recipients include Jesse Alexander, Keith Crain, John Fitch, Denise McCluggage, Jochen Mass, Sir Stirling Moss and Roger Penske.

IN THE NEWS: The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT

    Enhanced driving dynamics

The new 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT boasts enhanced driving dynamics and even better on-track performance. With an enhanced maximum output of 583 hp (435 kW), a re-calibrated AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission and the redeveloped AMG Adaptive Suspension, the new SLS AMG GT – which is available both as a Coupé and a Roadster – has raised the bar even higher. As a further highlight, a new optional AMG designo STYLE interior package is now also available for the 2013 SLS AMG GT. According to Tobias Moers, Board Member and Head of Overall Vehicle Development for Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “The new SLS AMG GT demonstrates the sort of potential which lies in AMG’s super sports cars. With its even higher levels of performance, the SLS AMG GT excites out on the race track in particular by providing an emotionally enjoyable and passionate driving experience.”

For MY2013 in the U.S., Mercedes-Benz will now exclusively offer the new SLS AMG GT. Available as a Coupe and Roadster, it will go on sale in mid-November 2012, replacing previous SLS AMG versions.

Masculine and decidedly athletic the new SLS AMG GT is distinguished by darkened headlamp and tail light lenses a unique wheel color and red-painted brake calipers. The wing-shaped cross fins and the star recess in the radiator grille are given a new high-gloss black finish, as do the exterior mirrors and the fins on the hood and front fenders. The AMG logo on the right of the trunk lid also features the additional letters “GT” to clearly identify this new model.

One look at the technical specifications highlights the fact that AMG successfully elevated the dynamic profile of the SLS AMG GT even further. The maximum output of the AMG 6.3-liter V8 front mid-engine has been increased to 583 hp at 6800 rpm, while the maximum torque is maintained at 479 lb/ft at 4750 rpm. These changes yield a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 3.6 (est) seconds with a max speed of 197mph (electronically limted).

When changing gears manually via the alloy shift paddles on the AMG Performance steering wheel, gear change are executed crisply and markedly quicker than previously – all of which is ideal when striving to achieve ambitious lap times on a closed race circuit.

These changes in shift reaction time and feel provide an even more emotional experience for the driver. The automatic double-declutching function when downshifting is also more pronounced in the SLS AMG GT. Due to a modified engine mapping profile that changes the engine torque delivered in manual mode, the shift procedure is even quicker than previously – and is accompanied by some passionate acoustic feedback for the driver. Overall, the optimization of the dual clutch transmission complements the sportier focus of the SLS AMG GT perfectly.

    New AMG Adaptive Performance Suspension
It is not just the enhancements to AMG’s M159 6.3-liter V8 and the optimized dual clutch transmission which are responsible for increasing the driving dynamics of the SLS AMG GT. The newly developed AMG Adaptive Performance Suspension also enhances the vehicle’s sportiness. In the case of the SLS AMG GT, Mercedes-AMG has combined the sophisticated suspension layout of twin aluminium wishbones all round with specially tuned variable, electronically controlled dampers. Compared with the AMG Adaptive Suspension from the 2012 Model Year SLS AMG, the new AMG Adapative Performance Suspension for the SLS AMG GT features stiffer and more
aggressive spring/damper tuning for a more dynamic feel.

“Sport” mode is tuned as the optimum setting for undulating road surfaces and routes requiring increased suspension travel – such as found on rural roads or the legendary North Loop of the Nürburgring, for example.

The control algorithm of the AMG Adaptive Performance Suspension reacts best to fluctuations in the road surface with a tendency towards lower/softer damper force levels. The resulting effect is the best possible performance by effectively preventing body roll for enhanced contact with the road when adopting a sporty driving style. The enhanced driving dynamics and even better race track performance are measureable: as part of an internal comparison with the SLS AMG, the SLS AMG GT is able to achieve faster lap times on a race track.

“Sport plus” provides higher/firmer damping forces and features specific control algorithms which have been adjusted for a decidedly sporty driving style on routes with a level road surface – such as when trying to achieve ambitious lap times on a race circuit such as Hockenheim.

Selection of suspension modes via the AMG DRIVE UNIT
Depending on the driving conditions, speed and vehicle load, the AMG Adaptive Performance Suspension adjusts the damping characteristics at lightning speed and automatically reduces the roll angle of the body. The two modes can be selected via a button on the AMG DRIVE UNIT. The activated suspension mode is indicated by means of indicator lamps on the button and the display in the AMG main menu.

As standard, the vehicle comes with 265/35 R 19 tires on the front and 295/30 R 20 tires on the rear, fitted to weight-optimized AMG forged light-alloy wheels featuring a 10-spoke design and that are inlayed in a matte black finish and with machine polished high-sheen finish on the face of the wheel. Three additional optional AMG light-alloy wheel styles/colors are also available.

    Interior with consistently sporty highlights
The interior of the SLS AMG GT features a distinctivly sporty design: combining the high-quality, exclusive ambience of a true AMG model with the emotional atmosphere of a racing car. The sports seats covered in designo leather, feature center sections finished in Alcantara® and are accented with an embossed AMG crest on the head restraint. Complimenting the styling design of the seats, Alcantara® is also found as an accent on the door panels. These premium materials are combined with red seat belts, red trimmed floormats and red contrast stitching thoughout the interior on the sports seats, center console, dashboard, and door panels.

The high-gloss black trim on the center console and door panels perfectly match the new high-gloss black finish found on the trim rings of the air vents and the real metal insert on the AMG Performance steering wheel. The steering wheel has been enhanced as well with side grips finished in Alcantara®, a flat bottom section and now features a new red 12 o’clock marking for easier orientation while driving. The instrument cluster of the SLS GT has also been visually enhanced with new black dials and a black accent surrounding the LED shift lights.

AMG designo STYLE interior package for all SLS AMG GT
Also now available with the introduction of the SLS AMG GT, is a new, highly exclusive option in the form of the AMG designo STYLE package. This expressive option is available in three different color combinations in both single and two-tone finishes. It comprises a distinctive upholstery design featuring full designo leather with a contrast stitching and a diamond quilt design on the seats and door panel inserts.

Other highlights include designo leather for the entire dashboard, the beltlines, door armrests and the handrest on the centre console. AMG floor mats are in black with porcelain leather edging and the roof lining and parcel shelf (Coupé) or roll-over bar (Roadster) are finished in porcelain Alcantara.® Seat piping is also finished in contrasting colors which offer an exciting highlight and underscores the exclusive, hand-finished nature of this new styling package. Available color combinations include mocha brown/porcelain, titanium grey/porcelain and mystic red/porcelain.
Other attractive optional extras for the SLS AMG GT include (extract):
    – AMG carbon-fiber exterior mirrors
    – AMG carbon-fiber engine compartment covers
    – AMG Interior Carbon-Fiber package (carbon-fiber trim, trim on seat backrest and side, door sill panels)
    – AMG carbon ceramic high-performance composite braking system
    – AMG Performance Media
    – AMG 10-spoke forged wheels in additional colors
    – AMG carbon-fiber interior trim
    – Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG surround sound system

The specific assembly area for the SLS AMG is located in the largest Mercedes-Benz production plant in Sindelfingen. The AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine comes directly from the AMG engine workshop in Affalterbach, where it is hand-assembled according to the traditional “one man, one engine” philosophy.

40 significant awards for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
The SLS AMG has succeeded in winning numerous comparison tests against a host of international competitors conducted by the international specialist media – both as the gullwing model and the Roadster. Since its world premiere at the IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt in 2009 and the presentation of the SLS AMG Roadster in May 2011, the super sports car from Mercedes-AMG has picked up a total of 40 awards – including such major prizes as the “German Design Award”, the “Red Dot Design Award”, the “Golden Steering Wheel 2009”, “Classic of the Future”, “Sports Car of the Year”, “Best Performance Car” and “Legends on Wheels”.

IN MOTORSPORT(?): World’s Farthest Golf Ball Hit into a Moving Car

Formula 1™ legend and DTM driver David Coulthard and professional golfer Jake Shepherd set a Guinness World Record yesterday (30 May 2012) at Dunsfold Aerodrome, Surrey, as part of a viral film for Mercedes-Benz UK.

David, who was driving the awesome 571hp Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster at 120mph, caught a golf ball in the cockpit of the moving car which was 275 metres from the tee, and hit by Jake at an astonishing 178mph. This amazing achievement secured the world record for the furthest golf shot caught in a moving car in only the second attempt of the day.

The outstanding feat of skill was captured on film and will be launched in early July to celebrate the power of the SLS AMG Roadster which, thanks to its AMG hand-assembled M 159 V8 engine, rockets to 62mph in just 3.8 seconds.

David Coulthard said: “This world record attempt is definitely one of the most unusual things I’ve ever been asked to do with a car! Jake Shepherd was great to work with and the performance of the SLS AMG Roadster made driving to catch a mid-air golf ball even more exciting. I am honoured to have received the Guinness World Record for the furthest golf shot caught in a car.”

David George,Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars Marketing Director, concluded: “We thought we’d do something exciting to celebrate this special car, and our association with golf ahead of the upcoming Open Championship. It was great to set a new world record in the process thanks to an amazing effort from David and Jake.”

IN THE NEWS: The New Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG

    Effortlessly superior and stylish performance

Affalterbach – Mercedes-AMG is embarking on the 2012 roadster season in inimitably dynamic style: following on from the recent launch of the SL 63 AMG, the top eight-cylinder model, there now comes the presentation of the new Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG, the V12 roadster in the line-up from the Stuttgart-based manufacturer. The AMG 6.0-litre V12 “biturbo” (twin-turbocharged) engine develops a maximum output of 630 hp and maximum torque of 1000 newton metres. The result: exceptional performance, impressive power delivery and effortlessly superior dynamics. As with the SLS AMG super sports car, the use of an all-aluminium bodyshell results in a drastic reduction in weight. The new SL 65 AMG is some 170 kilograms lighter than before. The expressive front section is dominated by the new “twin blade” radiator grille and the front apron’s lower cross strut in high-sheen chrome.

“The combination of exclusive V12 dynamic performance and a refined roadster driving experience was already the defining attribute of the predecessor model. We are convinced that, with the new SL 65 AMG, we have developed an incomparably exciting high-performance vehicle for the small, but loyal community of fans,” says Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

An important aspect of the new model is the intelligent lightweight construction which also contributes to improved fuel efficiency. At 24.4 mpg (NEDC combined), the new car is 17 per cent more efficient than the previous SL 65 AMG and simultaneously establishes a new benchmark in the twelve-cylinder petrol engine segment. A major role in the reduced fuel consumption figures is played by the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC transmission, the ECO start/stop‑function, in-engine measures to optimise efficiency and alternator management. Despite the significantly reduced fuel consumption, the maximum output of the AMG V12 6-litre biturbo engine is up from 612 hp to 630 hp. The maximum torque is 1000 newton metres.

The unrivalled performance figures of the new SL 65 AMG translate into an exceptional driving experience: acceleration from 0 to 62 mph takes 4 seconds with the 125 mph mark attained after just 11.8 seconds. The top speed is 155 mph (electronically limited). As well as offering stunning acceleration, the AMG twelve-cylinder biturbo engine impresses with its smooth running characteristics and its distinctive AMG V12 sound. It is a performance that reconciles effortless superiority and stylishness to perfection.

The AMG 6-litre V12 biturbo engine with the designation M 279 is based on the M 275 engine used previously and has been comprehensively revised for the new SL 65 AMG. New exhaust gas turbochargers with an increased spiral cross-section, new manifolds and wastegate ducts with optimised flow characteristics increase the engine output by 18 hp. The multi-spark ignition with twelve double ignition coils not only results in smoother running, but also enables even more effective combustion in combination with a new engine management system with higher performance and optimised cylinder heads.

The resulting reduction in exhaust emissions is also due to a large extent to the optimised catalytic converter system. The newly developed AMG sports exhaust system, which has a pipe layout with enhanced flow characteristics, is 3.2 kilograms lighter as a result of a reduction in the wall thickness.

But it is not just the inner qualities of the AMG 6-litre V12 biturbo engine that impress. The powerplant’s looks are as inspiring as its performance: the high-quality carbon-fibre and aluminium engine cover reflects the exceptional character of the powerful twelve-cylinder unit.

    New: AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC

For the first time AMG has combined the 6-litre V12 biturbo engine with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G‑TRONIC. The seven-speed automatic transmission with its wide gear ratio spread enables a significantly lower engine speed and helps to reduce fuel consumption. A new fuel economy torque converter, bearings designed for reduced friction loss and the transmission-oil thermal management system are responsible for a further increase in the efficiency of the power transmission system.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G‑TRONIC has four different driving modes – Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S), Sport plus (S+) and Manual (M) – which can be selected at the push of a button on the centre console. In “C” mode the ECO start/stop function is permanently active. The compelling, dynamic character of the driving experience is made all the more vivid by the automatic double-declutching function during downshifts and through the brief, precisely defined interruption of ignition and fuel injection during upshifts under full load; the latter functionality has the additional benefit of reducing the shift times.

Intelligent lightweight construction with all-aluminium bodyshell and carbon fibre

Compared with the predecessor model’s steel design, the all-aluminium bodyshell of the new SL 65 AMG delivers a significant weight saving of around 110 kilograms as well as superior rigidity, safety and comfort. Intelligent lightweight construction also means that the components have been optimised in line with their specific purpose. Various types of processing are used for the aluminium components, for instance, which are produced as permanent mould castings or vacuum die castings before being processed into extruded sections or used in the form of sheet aluminium with varying wall thicknesses. The result is high rigidity, high safety and improved vibration characteristics. For the cover behind the tank, the designers use even lighter magnesium material in certain areas. High-strength steel tubes are integrated into the A-pillars for safety reasons.

The boot lid helps to further trim the weight. For the first time on a volume-produced model, the inner support is made from lightweight carbon-fibre composite. The extremely rigid carbon-fibre component is bonded to the plastic outer shell, resulting in a weight saving of five kilograms compared with a conventional boot lid – an innovative solution that is being pioneered with the AMG SL models. This raft of innovative lightweight-design measures means that, at an EC kerb weight of 1950 kilograms, the new SL 65 AMG is 170 kilograms lighter than the model it replaces.

AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control

Mercedes-AMG also makes systematic use of lightweight construction principles for the suspension. The steering knuckles and spring links of the 4-link front suspension and almost all of the multi-link independent rear suspension components are made of aluminium. Both the vehicle’s handling agility and the response of the spring and damper components are enhanced by the reduction in unsprung masses. Like the predecessor model, the new SL 65 AMG is equipped as standard with the ABC active suspension system. The AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control fitted in the eight-cylinder SL 63 AMG has been enhanced and its setup optimised for this new top-of-the-range model.

Driving dynamics and performance were the key objectives during the design, development and testing phases. It is possible to choose between two suspension settings at the touch of a button: distinctly sporty characteristics with reduced roll angles and firm body damping (“Sport”) or a mode for high comfort on long journeys (“Comfort”). More negative camber on both axles and fully revised elastokinematics result in greater agility and faster cornering speeds.

New electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering

Equipped with the newly developed electro-mechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, the V12 top model impresses with high dynamic qualities and eloquent feedback at the critical limits. The steering has a constant, more direct ratio and variable power assistance which adjusts in line with the suspension mode. Further standard equipment includes 3-stage ESP®, a special feature exclusive to AMG with “SPORT Handling” mode for particularly keen drivers, and an AMG rear axle differential which helps ensure that the phenomenal engine output is put down on the road as effectively as possible.

All the qualities expected of an AMG high-performance braking system – excellent deceleration characteristics, optimum sensitivity and high resistance to fading – are delivered to perfection by the newly developed brake system of the SL 65 AMG. It features 390 x 36 mm compound discs with six-piston fixed callipers at the front and 360 x 26 mm integral discs with single-piston sliding callipers at the rear. An electric parking brake is fitted as standard. Red-painted callipers, as well as the even more powerful weight-optimised AMG ceramic high-performance compound brake system as seen on the SLS AMG, are available from the AMG Performance Studio as options.

New AMG brand face with two blade-like louvres

The new SL 65 AMG lives up to its stylish and exclusive high-performance roadster claim not only with its engineering but through its looks, too. The SL 65 AMG is the first model to feature the new AMG brand face. The two elements which dominate the form – the radiator grille and the lower cooling air intake – are retained but in reinterpreted form which gives them a more distinctive identity in terms of dynamism and the sense of perceived value they convey. The central styling feature is the new “twin blade” radiator grille in high-sheen chrome. The Mercedes star is mounted on two blade-like louvres whose profile recalls that of an aircraft wing. The more pronounced V-shape of the radiator grille optimises the longitudinal proportions of the vehicle and so adds even greater visual emphasis to the attributes of aerodynamics and purism.

Below the “twin blade” radiator grille, the stylised “A”, a characteristic feature of AMG vehicles, is retained. A gap formed below a fine black fin at the lower edge of the cooling air opening allows an optimum airflow over the cooling modules – a perfect combination of aesthetics and high technology. The lower cross strut in the front apron is finished in high-sheen chrome and is given a perceived sense of depth by the gap above it – a distinctive note which adds the perfect finishing touch to the front of the vehicle. The “twin blade” radiator grille and lower cross strut are the two complementary styling elements which underline the new AMG brand face – a look which will be picked up by the styling of future AMG models and so further increase the recognition value of the AMG performance brand.

The V12 top model is distinguished from the SL 63 AMG through the strategic use of high-sheen chrome highlights: along with the “twin blade” radiator grille and the lower cross strut, the surrounds of the special AMG daytime running lamps as well as the fins on the bonnet and the side of the wings have the same finish. Further characteristic AMG styling cues to be found on the
SL 65 AMG include the front apron with large openings for the engine oil, water, charge air and transmission oil coolers, the specially shaped side sill panels, the AMG spoiler lip and the diffuser-look rear apron with a vehicle-colour insert.

In addition to the two special chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system, the characteristic V12 features include the “V12 BITURBO” legend on the front wings and the AMG 5-spoke light-alloy wheels painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish and equipped with 255/35 R 19 and 285/30 R 19 tyres at front and rear respectively. AMG multi-spoke forged light-alloy wheels from the AMG Performance Studio with 255/35 R 19 front tyres and 285/30 R 20 rear tyres reduce the unsprung masses. The forged wheels are also available in matt black with a high-sheen rim flange.

Vario-roof: MAGIC SKY CONTROL as an option

The sixth-generation SL retains the electrohydraulically operated vario-roof which can be retracted to save space, enabling the SL 65 AMG to be transformed into a roadster or a coupé, as the mood takes the driver and depending on the weather, in under 20 seconds. In contrast to the predecessor model, there are two versions to choose from for the new SL: the panoramic vario-roof or the unique panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL. The transparency of the latter can be switched to light or dark at the push of a button.

Interior: a feast for all the senses

Inside, too, the SL 65 AMG has exclusive design and equipment features which differentiate it from its eight-cylinder sister model. The electrically adjustable AMG sports seats with single or two-tone upholstery in Exclusive nappa leather with a special AMG diamond pattern are a particular highlight. This distinctive upholstery is also to be found on the door centre panels. Embossed AMG emblems on the seat backrests are standard, as are AIRSCARF neck-level heating, multicontour functionality, seat memory and climatised seats. The designo headlining in leather with partial AMG V12 diamond-design quilting provides the perfect visual and tactile finishing touch.

The design of the cockpit recalls the SLS AMG: the four air vents styled like jet engines, the E-SELECT lever and the AMG DRIVE UNIT are all reminiscent of the super sports car’s styling. The choice of exquisite materials and the first-class workmanship which characterise the interior of the SL 65 AMG indulge all the senses. Highlights include the AMG carbon-fibre trim elements, the IWC-design analogue clock, the chromed AMG door sill panels illuminated in white and the AMG Performance steering wheel which is embellished by an AMG logo in the lower metal insert. A speedometer calibrated to 360 km/h in the AMG instrument cluster and the AMG start-up display with an exclusive AMG V12 BITURBO animation hint at the exceptionally dynamic performance of the SL 65 AMG.

The twelve-cylinder roadster has exclusive and comprehensive equipment and appointments to meet just about every requirement (selection):

One of the world’s safest roadsters

A crash-optimised aluminium structure, standard-fit PRE-SAFE® system and assistance systems on a par with those of the S-Class make the SL one of the world’s safest roadsters. The rigid aluminium bodyshell forms a robust occupant compartment as well as precisely defined deformation zones at the front and rear. If the vehicle rolls over, A-pillars made from a steel-aluminium material mix and two automatic roll-over bars help to protect the occupants.

The restraint systems, including two-stage driver and passenger airbags, have been further enhanced. A headbag covers much of the side head-impact area. An additional thorax airbag in the backrest can protect the upper body in the event of a side impact. Further new standard features for the SL include the Mercedes-Benz-developed NECK-PRO crash-responsive head restraints. An active bonnet and a front end with a large, yielding impact area help ensure pedestrian protection.

IN THE NEWS: The New Mercedes-Benz SL

    Lightweight, athletic, luxurious

Stuttgart – With the completely redeveloped SL, Mercedes-Benz continues a tradition that began 60 years ago. The letters “SL” have ever since been synonymous with a symbiosis of sportiness, style and comfort – and with groundbreaking innovations. The new SL has been produced for the first time almost entirely from aluminium and weighs up to 140 kilograms less than its predecessor. Its highly rigid all-aluminium bodyshell provides the basis for agile, sporty handling that has been taken to an entirely new level, coupled with exemplary roll characteristics and ride comfort. Even better driving dynamics come courtesy of the new BlueDIRECT engines; they are more powerful yet at the same time up to 29 per cent more economical than the engines in the outgoing generation. Other new features include the unique FrontBass system, which turns the luxury sports car into a concert hall regardless of whether the top is open or closed, and the highly efficient adaptive windscreen wipe/wash system MAGIC VISION CONTROL; it supplies water from the wiper blade as required and depending on the direction of wipe.

Compared with its successful predecessor, the new Mercedes-Benz SL offers considerably more comfort and sportiness, setting new standards in the luxury roadster class. Added to which is uncompromising day-to-day suitability, which turns the SL into an incomparable all-rounder among sports cars. In short, anyone that talks about the new SL is bound to be talking about the ultimate in passionate, refined motoring.

Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars: “There are around 900 million cars in the world and thousands of models. But there are only a handful of automotive icons. Our SL is one of them: it has class, it has style, it is the ultimate in comfort and luxury. But it combines all that with incredible sportiness and dynamism. You would struggle to find a car that embodies Gottlieb Daimler’s aspiration more perfectly than our new SL: the best or nothing.”

Lighter and more rigid: sophisticated all-aluminium bodyshell

The new-generation Mercedes-Benz SL takes the meaning of the famous letters “SL” – sporty, lightweight – literally. Consistent weight reduction is one of the most outstanding design characteristics in the new SL as was the case in its namesake, the original SL of 1952 with its lightweight tubular frame. For the first time Mercedes-Benz has implemented an all-aluminium bodyshell in a series-production model. Only very few components consist of other materials. The designers use the even lighter magnesium for the cover behind the tank. High-strength steel tubing is integrated in the A-pillars for safety reasons.

The new aluminium bodyshell weighs around 110 kilograms less than it would using the steel technology from the predecessor. “The effect is rather as if a heavyweight-class passenger had got out of the car,” says Dr Thomas Rudlaff, responsible for the aluminium bodyshell at Mercedes-Benz. “The result is perceptible and measurable. Less weight means more dynamism and less consumption. In other words: the motoring enjoyment increases, the environmental burden sinks.”

The aluminium structure is not only lighter but also proves superior to the predecessor’s steel construction in terms of rigidity, safety and comfort. This is achieved thanks, among other things, to its intelligent lightweight construction with components optimised for their specific task. Thus, diverse processes are used to make different kinds of aluminium depending on the use the component is to be given: the parts are made by chill casting or vacuum die-casting, worked into extruded aluminium sections or into aluminium panels of different thicknesses. The result: high rigidity, high safety levels and better vibration characteristics.

Although the new SL is even more comfortable and has more assistance systems on-board than its predecessor and therefore does actually sacrifice some of the weight saved through the aluminium bodyshell, the scales show some astonishing figures: the new SL 500 weighs around 125 kilograms less than its predecessor. On balance, the SL 350 is even 140 kilograms lighter – all thanks to a host of other intelligent enhanced details to reduce weight, which Mercedes-Benz has also implemented in the new SL in addition to the aluminium bodyshell.

Driving pleasure: frugal, powerful engines and agile suspension

Powerful while accelerating, effortlessly superior across all speeds, nimble on winding roads – the new SL provides ample driving pleasure. Apart from the powerful engines, the sportily tuned yet comfortable suspension, which also boasts intelligent lightweight construction, proves outstanding. For instance, the steering knuckles and spring links on the front axle are also made out of aluminium to reduce the unsprung masses. The same also applies to virtually all the wheel location components on the rear axle.

The new SL is available with two different suspension systems: the SL features semi-active adjustable damping as standard. The optional active suspension system ABC (Active Body Control) is available as an alternative.

Both suspension variants are combined with a new electromechanical Direct-Steer system featuring speed-sensitive power steering and a ratio that can be varied across the steering wheel angle. This ensures excellent straight-line stability and, therefore, a high degree of assuredness when travelling at motorway speeds and makes the SL very agile. It also reduces the amount of steering required when parking and manoeuvring.

The new V8 in the SL 500 develops 435 hp from its displacement of 4663 cc and thus around 12 percent more than its predecessor despite some 0.8 litres less displacement. The fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 22 per cent. At the same time, the torque has increased from 530 Nm to 700 Nm – a gain of 32 percent. Although the displacement remains the same at 3499 cc, the new V6 engine in the new SL 350 develops 306 hp and delivers 370 Nm of torque. It uses just 6.8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, making it almost 30 percent more economical than its predecessor. Both engine variants come with a standard-fit ECO start/stop function. The 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission, which has been optimised in relation to fuel consumption and comfort, also contributes to the exemplary, low fuel consumption. The fuel economy of the BlueDIRECT engines takes nothing away from the roadster’s raciness. Quite the contrary: the SL 350 accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 5.9 seconds, making it three tenths of a second faster than its predecessor. The SL 500 takes just 4.6 seconds – eight tenths less than the previous SL 500.

    Interior: aesthetic, stylish, sporty

The new SL combines its aesthetically honed profile, which follows the Mercedes-Benz tradition, with a luxurious feel. Fine materials, perfectly finished with great attention to detail, distinguish the style and character of the interior.

Compared with its predecessor, the new generation of the SL is much longer (+50 mm) and wider (+57 mm), providing more room for more comfort in the interior, too. Shoulder room (+37 mm) and elbow room (+28 mm) have been increased, exceeding the dimensions normally found in this vehicle class. Clear lines create a formally coherent internal space within this comfortable interior. Generously used wood trim extends from the centre console across the dashboard into the doors, creating a pleasant wrap-around effect. Three types of wood along with two different aluminium trim finishes are available. Perfectly in tune with the roadster’s character, it combines the unpretentious atmosphere of a high-performance sports car with a comfortable, stylish ambience one comes to expect in a luxurious touring car.

    Design: classic SL proportions

The designers have brought the latest generation of the SL unmistakably to life on the basis of tradition but added new perspectives and visions. The result is a stylishly sporty and elegant luxury sports car with the classic hallmark SL balanced proportions: the long bonnet gives way to a compact passenger compartment that is set well back. A wide, powerful rear end giving the impression of raciness provides the finishing touch. A handful of elaborately styled lines define the powerfully sculpted and yet calm surfaces of the flanks. Finely worked details, a striking rear end as well as ventilation grilles with chromed fins from the dynamic traditional Mercedes-Benz design heritage visually emphasise the SL legend.

An upright classic sports car radiator grille clearly marks out the new SL visually as a prestigious member of the current Mercedes-Benz sports car family. The centrally positioned star is a contemporary reinterpretation of the famous trademark, which now extends into the centre section with its organically flowing contours.

Dynamically slanting headlamps set well to the outside flank the striking front end and give the new roadster its own unmistakable face. The headlamps come as standard with the Intelligent Light System (ILS). With five different lighting functions that are tailored to typical driving and weather conditions, and are activated depending on the driving situation, the driver has a much better illuminated field of vision. The striking sidelights and the horizontal strip of the daytime running lamps in the far ends of the bumper feature
    LED technology.

Vario-roof: MAGIC SKY CONTROL as an option

The sixth generation of the SL also offers a vario-roof that can be retracted into the boot using an electrohydraulic mechanism to save space, which converts the SL in a few seconds into a roadster or a coupé, depending on the driver’s wishes and the weather. Unlike its predecessor, three versions are available for the new SL: painted, with glass roof or with the unique panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL. The transparent roof switches to light or dark at the push of a button. When light it is virtually transparent, offering an open-air experience even in cold weather. In its dark state the roof provides welcome shade and prevents the interior from heating up in bright sunlight. The frame of the three roof versions is made of magnesium, making the roofs around six kilograms lighter than the roof on the predecessor, thus providing a lower centre of gravity for the vehicle and, in turn, better agility.

The engineers have refined the operating mechanism for the roof and boot lid. It now takes less than 20 seconds to open or close the roof completely.

    Aerodynamics: new standards

The design of the new SL not only meets high aesthetic demands but it also boasts exemplary aerodynamic qualities.

As such, the roadster merits best marks in its segment in four important disciplines:

    • With the lowest drag coefficient (cd = 0.27 in the SL 350);
    • With the lowest wind noise that is virtually on a par with a closed saloon;
    • With the best comfort for open-top motoring so that you can still have the roof down even at high speed;
    • With virtually no accumulation of dirt on the side windows.

Two world premieres: FrontBass and MAGIC VISION CONTROL

With two innovations, the new SL remains true to its tradition as technological trendsetter:

    • MAGIC VISION CONTROL is a new, intelligent and highly efficient wipe/wash system. The innovative wiper blade concept always applies the washer fluid just in front of the wiper blade lip via the channels integrated into the blade – in both directions of wipe. As a result, no water is splashed onto the windscreen during spraying to disrupt the driver’s visibility, while at the same time cleaning the windscreen perfectly. The water also remains on the windscreen, thus ensuring it is cleaned without troubling the occupants, even with the roof down. For the first time a fully heated wiper blade is available as an option that prevents snow or ice from forming on the blade in winter. This heating function also allows warm water to be applied directly onto the windscreen for the first time, even in cold temperatures.
    • The likewise unique FrontBass system intelligently uses the free spaces in the aluminium structures in front of the footwell as resonance spaces for the bass loudspeakers. As a result the new SL features clear, crisp bass sounds that make possible a concert hall ambience even with the top down, and frees up space in the doors.

Both innovations are part of the extensive standard equipment of the new SL.

    HANDS-FREE ACCESS: ‘kick’ to open

The HANDS-FREE ACCESS system is another Mercedes-Benz innovation which provides hands-free, contactless operation of the boot lid. The driver simply moves their foot in the vicinity of the rear bumper. Mercedes-Benz is the only car maker to offer a system which not only automatically opens the boot lid but closes it as well.

    The safest roadster

Thanks to the crash-optimised aluminium structure, standard-fit PRE-SAFE® and assistance systems on the same high level as the S-Class, the SL is the world’s safest roadster. The rigid aluminium bodyshell forms a sturdy passenger compartment along with precisely defined deformation zones in the front and rear ends. In the event of the vehicle overturning, A-pillars made out of a mix of steel and aluminium and two roll-over bars protect the passenger compartment. The restraint systems including the two-stage driver and front passenger airbags have been further developed. A headbag integrally covers the side head-impact area. An additional thorax airbag in the seat backrest can protect the upper body in the event of a side impact. Another new feature is the crash-responsive NECK-PRO head restraints developed by Mercedes-Benz which are fitted as standard in the SL.

An active bonnet and a front end with a large, yielding impact area help ensure pedestrian protection.

A safety highlight is the unrivalled anticipatory occupant protection system PRE-SAFE® developed by Mercedes-Benz which is fitted as standard. If the system detects a serious risk of an accident, it reflexively activates precautionary protective measures for the vehicle occupants, so that the seat belts and airbags are able to fulfil their protective function to the full during an impact.

Additional post-crash measures supplement the integral safety concept and facilitate rapid assistance: regardless of the severity of the impact, the doors can be automatically unlocked after an accident, the interior lighting activated and the side windows lowered by 50 millimetres to ventilate the interior more effectively. The steering wheel can also be moved upwards.

Standard: ATTENTION ASSIST AND ADAPTIVE BRAKE

In the new SL too, a unique combination of driver assistance systems helps prevent accidents. These include the standard-fit drowsiness detection system ATTENTION ASSIST and the ADAPTIVE BRAKE. The latter features ABS, acceleration skid control (ASR) and active yaw control, and offers comfort and convenience functions in addition to safety functions.

The ADAPTIVE BRAKE works in conjunction with the equally adaptive brake lights. In emergency braking situations, it warns vehicles behind with flashing brake lights.

PRE-SAFE® Brake: autonomous partial and emergency braking in response to a serious risk of a rear-end collision

As an option DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control and PRE-SAFE® Brake, which is already well proven in other Mercedes-Benz models, are available. Both work on the basis of the same radar sensors. Once a serious risk of a rear-end collision is detected, the PRE-SAFE® Brake warns the driver initially and can initiate autonomous braking if the driver fails to react, and so either prevent the accident or at least mitigate its severity. PRE-SAFE® can also activate occupant protection measures.

Active Parking Assist: automatically manoeuvred into a parking space

The Active Parking Assist is new in the SL. Using ultrasound sensors it can identify parking spaces and automatically steer the vehicle into the space while parking.

    Infotainment: COMAND with internet access

Even in the entry-level variant, the new Mercedes-Benz SL comes with the “Cockpit Management and Data System” COMAND. Functionality includes Bluetooth telephony along with simpler operation of the car phone. COMAND Online with internet access and DVD changer is also available as an option. It provides unlimited web browsing while the vehicle is stationary along with high-speed access to a Mercedes-Benz online service – for instance requesting a weather report or a special destination search. There is also the option of sending individual destinations and routes via Google Maps to the vehicle. For the first time, Mercedes-Benz is also offering new apps for the new SL: in addition to a free news app and a Facebook app, there are optional
Mercedes-Benz apps for share prices and a car park finder. A Yelp app to look for restaurants is available for the US market.

THE PINNACLE OF AN AUTOMOTIVE ICON If the 80s were about affluence, power and opulence, there were few cars better suited to express it than the W126 S-Class. It was big. It was luxurious. It was sleek. But it was also smart. Safe. And as the tagline stated at the time, engineered like no other car in the world. In short, it was uncompromising. It was the Flagship of the Mercedes-Benz product line, commanding a sticker price of over $65,000. With an incredible 12-year production run, no S-Class before or since has captured the essence of what it means to be a flagship for longer. It continues to be used in film and popular culture as the iconic Big-body Benz and doesn’t get much argument when referred to as classic. By the end of its production run in 1991, refinements—in styling, safety, appointments and mechanicals—led to the best of the breed. Along with the larger motored 560 SEL, the more svelte 420 SEL still evokes power and panache like few cars throughout history. From the final year of production, the 420 SEL presented here is a perfect example of that. It’s been loved and revered by its owners to remain a statement of elegance and prestige, but with a classic presence that simply cannot be found in today’s luxury cars.

    OVERALL CONDITION
Because the cars were so drivable, it stands to reason that many SELs were driven. And driven. And driven. While it’s true that 420 SELs—like any Mercedes-Benz—have legendary durability, finding one with less than 100K miles is somewhat rare. The one listed here is not only a low-mileage example, with less than 87,000 documented miles, but as a testament to its attention to preservation, it retains its original window sticker. Further exemplifying a properly maintained Mercedes-Benz, it’s had a fresh 90,000 mi. scheduled maintenance ahead of schedule. It has all the prerequisites:

  • It has the original Becker Grand Prix audio system
  • It has a complete set of manuals
  • It has an up-to-date, stamped maintenance book
  • It matches its data card
  • The car is presented in a classic, tasty combination of Cabernet Red over Palomino leather. Paint, while not original, is in the original color and is deep with high gloss. The bumper was patched and repainted after a minor collision. Absolutely no other damage was sustained. There are some very minor scratched on the hood and trunk lid, and one small shopping cart ding on the right fender. Otherwise the body is exceptionally straight. Brightwork is a mirror finish with no pitting. Original glass is excellent all the way around. Mechanically, it’s a pleasure to drive. It idles smooth, pulls away strong, no engine vibration. There are no leaks, no smoke and no unusual smells. Shifting is clean and silky. There’s none of the lurching that is typical of more tired cars. Braking is superb, sure and straight. The interior is in near perfect condition. Seats are firm with very little wear on the leather. Dash is perfect with no cracks or warping. The Zebrano wood retains a deep polish and shows only minor crackling on the shifter console. Carpets are supple and fresh. All instruments work, including the clock. The trunk is clean with excellent fit and finish. The headliner is clean with no tears or stains. The car has a full set of books and two sets of keys, along with a complete, unmolested first aid kit. It’s everything a 420 SEL should be.

    DRIVING IMPRESSIONS
The 420 SEL—especially one in this condition—is still perfectly at home in just about any environment where style and grace meet suave and sexy. The first thing you’ll notice is the comfort. Seats are firm and supportive yet comfortable enough for all-day touring. Next you’ll grab the large, leather-wrapped steering wheel and turn the key as the 4.2 liter V8 comes to life. Put the car in drive and the car accelerates with steady power, which is considerable by 1991 standards and only a few horses shy of its 560 sibling (with less weight and more efficiency). It’s not neck-snapping by any means but plenty strong with a wide power band for excellent drivability at moderate sppeds. The ride is solid, smooth and quiet. It has a road feel that is lost in modern cars, yet it’s unmistakably a luxury car. In short, it’s a Mercedes-Benz.
