The lightweight, Handcrafted AMG 2.0L inline-4 turbo engine in the new AMG GT 43 produces 416 hp and features an electric exhaust gas turbocharger – technology derived from Formula 1™. AFFALTERBACH (November 7, 2024) – For the first time in its 57-year history, Mercedes-AMG is developing an SUV entirely in-house. The high performance SUV, “Born in Affalterbach,” is built on the company’s new proprietary AMG.EA electric high performance platform. Development vehicles are set to undergo initial test drives this winter.

High performance SUVs have long been a cornerstone of the AMG portfolio. Over 25 years ago, the performance and sports car brand from Affalterbach pioneered this segment with the launch of the ML 55 AMG. The high performance SUV segment quickly captured customers’ hearts, achieving robust growth ever since. Today, Mercedes‑AMG boasts six SUV model lines, including AMG GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, GLS and EQE SUV. The iconic Geländewagen Mercedes‑AMG G 63 is the crown jewel of the performance SUV lineup.

In this latest SUV project, Mercedes‑AMG is designing the entire vehicle architecture for the first time. This full-size SUV will be the second model built on the new all-electric AMG.EA high performance platform. It also represents the sixth vehicle fully developed by the performance specialists from Affalterbach, joining the first AMG.EA model currently in testing, as well as the AMG GT, SL, previous generation GT, and SLS models.

“SUVs have been among our most popular models for many years. With the ‘Born in Affalterbach’ SUV, we are responding to this trend by offering our customers a truly captivating high performance off-roader based on the AMG.EA platform. Our new high performance architecture follows a clear philosophy: ‘AMG First, EV Second.’ This means the vehicles not only excel as electric vehicles but also embody the core AMG qualities of emotion and performance.”

Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes‑AMG GmbH and Head of the Mercedes‑Benz G‑Class & Mercedes‑Maybach divisions

In a first drive, Mercedes‑Benz CEO Ola Källenius gives detailed insights into the next generation CLA at the Mercedes-Benz test facility in Immendingen, Germany. In a previous video, the Mercedes‑Benz boss tested the all-electric G 580 with EQ Technology in Austria and Sweden to give viewers a glimpse of what future products with the three-pointed star will offer. After the trip up Schöckl mountain last year, Ola reunites with host Sarah Harman to reveal more details about the upcoming CLA ahead of its world premiere in 2025.

This new model is the first of an all-new family of cars, heralding a new chapter for the segment at Mercedes‑Benz. The CLA is designed to set new standards in range, efficiency and charging speed, offering customers a choice of an advanced electric drivetrain or a high-tech electrified combustion engine. While the car is still a camouflaged prototype, Ola Källenius reveals the headlight design.

“With the CLA, we are ushering in a new era at Mercedes‑Benz. We will substantially elevate every aspect of what our customers can expect from a Mercedes in this segment. The modular platform allows for maximum flexibility: We can offer the CLA in both a state-of-the-art electric drivetrain version and a hybrid electrified combustion engine version. And our operating system, MB.OS, will make it the most intelligent car we’ve ever built.”

Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG

Drivetrain
The electric version of the CLA incorporates technology from the EQXX concept into series production. The next generation electric drivetrain unit was developed by Mercedes‑Benz, ensuring high performance and efficiency. Thanks to a two-speed transmission, sporty performance and efficiency are in perfect balance.

The new CLA will also be available with a newly-developed high-tech hybrid combustion engine. This engine, part of the MMA vehicle family, utilizes 48V technology combined with a new electrified transmission to deliver a highly efficient and enjoyable driving experience.

MBUX Virtual Assistant & MB.OS
The new CLA will be the first vehicle to feature the new Mercedes‑Benz Operating System (MB.OS), which includes the AI-powered MBUX Virtual Assistant. This system enhances the car-driver relationship with natural, intuitive interaction and proactive support.

Design
The new CLA will incorporate elements from the Concept CLA Class, including distinctive headlights, shown for the first time. The design will emphasize sportiness and modern aesthetics.

The iconic Jo’s Coffee on South Congress Avenue was transformed into a vibrant pit stop, drawing in F1 enthusiasts, customers, and special guests, including notable attendees like local DJ Confucius Jones and Mercedes-Benz brand ambassadors Jessica Hart & James Kirkham. STUTTGART/SHANGHAI (October 21, 2024) – At The City of Genius show in Shanghai on October 19, 2024, Mercedes-Benz and Moncler took the bold next step in their collaboration. Alongside the launch of the brand campaign, “Past Forward. Where the Future is Driven by the Past”, the partners unveiled a one-off art piece, “Project G-Class Past II Future”, inspired by NIGO. It’s based on a G-Class from the 90s that was completely restored. NIGO reworked numerous design elements inside and out to revive the design and brings it into the cultural landscape of the present. The G-Class Past II Future is a new G-Class model with a limited run of only 20 cars and is inspired by the art piece. At the show, the audience also got a sneak preview of Moncler’s new collection of urban, gender-neutral fashion designed by Mercedes-Benz and Moncler together with NIGO. Both the limited-edition G-Class and the capsule collection will be launched in April 2025. Alongside Mercedes-Benz and NIGO, the Shanghai event additionally hosted several other artists, who presented their own respective collaborations with Moncler: A$AP Rocky and Willow Smith, Edward Enninful (OBE), FRGMT by Hiroshi Fujiwara, Gilga Farm by Donald Glover, LuLu Li and Palm Angels. In addition to the Moncler Genius 2024 lineup, special showcases were presented by Rick Owens and Jil Sander.

“NIGO’s immense creative talent and our co-creation with Moncler are taking us into an exciting urban setting. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class Past II Future is a very special new ‘twist’ on our icon. This limited edition is a fresh take on 90s style and the character that’s made the G-Class a timeless favourite. Going from inspiring art to engaging products marks an important step in our creative cooperation and offers a new brand experience captured by the zeitgeist.”
Bettina Fetzer, Vice President Communications & Marketing Mercedes-Benz AG

Art piece Project G-Class Past II Future inspired by NIGO
NIGO’s creation is the second art piece to emerge from the collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Moncler. Like the PROJECT MONDO G, launched at Moncler’s “The Art of Genius” show in London in February 2023, this art piece merges the distinctively quilted aesthetic of the Moncler puffer jacket with the unmistakable edginess of the G-Class. Measuring 4.5 meters in length, 1.9 meters in width and 2.0 meters in height, the art piece features a minimalistic, matte two-tone contemporary color palette in olive green and grey, which is offset by striking exterior accents in black and gold. The clean lines of the classic G-Class cabriolet give it a contemporary attitude. Hallmark G-Class functionality and design cues are retained and reinterpreted. These include the iconic spare wheel on the rear tailgate, black steel wheels in the 90s design, a foldable windscreen, and a gold-coloured fuel can. The interior has also been reworked. Among other elements, G-Class enthusiast Devon Turnbull – known for his immersive audio installations – has designed a sound system that fits perfectly into the vehicle concept, both technically and visually. The music “boom boxes” are mounted on the convertible top linkage and – like the entire roof and the speakers – can be removed. Its chequered seat upholstery pattern is an interpretation of a design element typical of earlier G-Class models.  Accents in orange and gold draw parallels with the collaborative fashion collection by Mercedes-Benz, Moncler and NIGO.

“For me, the 90s were among the most influential decades from a cultural and creative standpoint. Electronic music and the hip-hop scene arose as a new expression of urban character. I wanted to integrate that vibe and energy into the design of the Project G-Class Past II Future by interpreting that legacy for a new contemporary era.”

NIGO, fashion designer, music producer and creative director

Limited edition Mercedes-Benz G-Class Past II Future
Both the limited-edition G-Class and the capsule collection are the collaboration’s first products available for purchase. As a crowning moment in the 45th anniversary year of the G-Class, the new edition shows how timeless this brand icon remains, and how capably it adapts to contemporary lifestyles. The Mercedes-Benz G-Class Past II Future references NIGO’s one-off art piece and is based on the new G 450 d.  It has two-tone exterior paintwork in green and grey, the G-Class typical chequered upholstery and a rear-mounted spare wheel with the collaboration logo on its cover. Black exterior accents include the window frames, light metal alloy wheels and the signature bumper guard running the full length of the flanks. The latter features the Past II Future lettering. In the interior, this lettering can be found on the grab handle. On the centre console, the vehicle’s “1 of 20” limited series number is inscribed. The 20 cars will be delivered to customers in April 2025.

The capsule collection
The gender-neutral fashion collection incorporates 90s influences with contemporary street style elements. Following “The City of Genius” show preview, the pieces shown will be winnowed down into a capsule collection that will be available for purchase starting in April 2025. It will mainly consist of souvenir and college jackets, hoodies, checked shirts and Bermuda shorts as well as lightweight down and field jackets, parkas and windbreakers with a vintage look. The color palette is classic: Blue, black, green and white dominate – complemented by orange accents. Many of the garments feature elaborate prints that merge archival photos of the collaboration partners. Jackets and pants are made using raw denim, with one exception: a satin jacket that combines the visual language and logos of both brands. The jacket captures the spirit of their collaboration, especially in combination with the grey checked shirts.

Brand campaign “Past Forward. Where the Future is Driven by the Past”
The unbreakable bond between past and future is reflected in the brand campaign accompanying this next step in the Mercedes-Benz x Moncler collaboration – together with NIGO and photographer Thibaut Grevet. With the motto, “Past Forward. Where the Future is Driven by the Past”, it visualizes the evolution of the collaboration from an imaginary cosmos to its arrival in metropolitan life. A city rooftop symbolizes the campaign’s urban look and feel. The rooftop’s angular metallic surfaces provide the perfect backdrop for showcasing the streetwear collection by the partners Mercedes-Benz, Moncler and NIGO. The campaign’s aim is to highlight the overarching theme of taking inspiration from the past, harnessing creativity and translating it into something new. The global campaign will be rolled out across each brand’s respective websites and social media channels. In addition to the main campaign film, a making-of video by Theodor Guelat gives a closer, behind-the-scenes peek into the collaboration with NIGO.

ZURICH (October 7, 2024) – Bonhams is excited to offer, for charity, the IWC Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team (reference IW38830, circa 2024), worn on the podium by legendary British Formula One™ driver and IWC Schaffhausen ambassador Lewis Hamilton after his record-breaking ninth win at the 2024 Silverstone Grand Prix.

This exclusive online auction, featuring the watch and a framed pair of signed racing gloves, is now live and will conclude on 19 October, coinciding with The Laureus Charity Night in Zurich.

Throughout his career spanning over 20 years, Lewis Hamilton has accomplished more than any other driver could hope for. He has secured seven Formula One World Drivers’ Championship titles and holds the records for the most wins (105), pole positions (104), and podium finishes (201). However, one of the most significant wins of Hamilton’s entire career may be his recent triumph at the iconic Silverstone circuit. By achieving a record-breaking ninth British Grand Prix™ win, Hamilton became the first driver to win a Grand Prix race in 16 different seasons and the first to win a Grand Prix after making 300 starts. His Silverstone victory marked his 12th consecutive British Grand Prix™ podium and his 150th podium with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ team.

The victory at Silverstone was even more meaningful because Hamilton had been denied a first place finish in the two previous seasons. Upon crossing the finish line, he felt immense relief, and his emotions were heartfelt. He expressed his gratitude on Instagram: “It has been 945 days since the last win, and it has finally come home. SILVERSTONE, I LOVE YOU. There’s no crowd that deserves this more. This is love, this is family. Thank you all for the love and support.”

When Hamilton held up the trophy on the podium, he was wearing the Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team. This unique watch is now available for bidding, offering you the chance to own a piece of motorsport history that is charged with emotion like no other. In addition to the watch, there are also the original racing gloves that Lewis Hamilton wore during his legendary drive at Silverstone – signed by the champion himself, and donated by the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One™ team.

The chronograph features a 41-millimetre case, crown and case back ring made of Ceratanium®. This IWC-developed lightweight material is based on a special titanium alloy. It combines the lightness and structural integrity of titanium with a hardness and scratch resistance similar to ceramic. An outstanding functional feature is the ceramic bezel with a tachymeter scale. Matching the polished bezel, the watch features a black dial with a glossy finish. The recessed totalizers, hands, applied indices, and numerals in blackened nickel, filled with Super-LumiNova®, ensure excellent nighttime readability.

The Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team is powered by the IWC-manufactured 69385 calibre. This chronograph movement consists of 242 parts and is visible through the tinted sapphire glass case back. Its bi-directional pawl winding system builds up a power reserve of 46 hours in the mainspring. The chronograph features the IWC-typical vertical subdial layout. The minutes are displayed at 12 o’clock, enhancing readability. The watch is fitted with a durable and waterproof black rubber strap with a Ceratanium® pin buckle.

AFFALTERBACH/ADENAU (October 2, 2024) – The Mercedes-AMG ONE has been the fastest production car on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife since October 2022 and has been unrivalled ever since. The only rival is the ONE itself. Now Mercedes‑AMG brand ambassador and DTM driver Maro Engel has once again significantly improved the lap time he set. With an officially measured and notarised time of 6:29.090 minutes for the 20.832-kilometre track, the hypercar with Formula 1™ technology beat its own record for production vehicles by over five seconds. This makes the Mercedes‑AMG ONE the first road car to beat the magic mark of 6:30 minutes. It is also the only series hybrid hypercar to date to have taken on the world’s most demanding racetrack and is the undisputed leader in the super-sports-car class.

“We’ve held the record for road vehicles for almost two years now. But at AMG, we always want to push the boundaries of what is possible to the maximum or even push them a little further. That’s why we have once again demonstrated what is possible with the unique AMG ONE. The entire team has been rewarded for its efforts and commitment. I’m proud of this determined team effort and of this fantastic record time. Once again, we’ve impressively demonstrated the spirit and expertise of AMG.”

Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes‑AMG GmbH and Head of the Mercedes‑Benz G‑Class & Mercedes‑Maybach divisions

“Two years ago, the conditions were not ideal, and some sections of the track were still a little damp. We knew we could do more, and we wanted to show that. Today we were able to demonstrate the maximum potential of the AMG ONE. Many thanks to the whole team from Affalterbach for the trust they’ve placed in me. It was a great pleasure and honour to be able to drive this record lap with such a unique car.”

Maro Engel, Mercedes‑AMG brand ambassador

In order to achieve the lofty goals they had set for themselves, meticulous preparation was necessary. In addition, the track conditions had to be ideal in order to beat the 6:30 minute target. On September 23, 2024, at 6:56 p.m., on his third timed lap, Maro Engel achieved the new record. With temperatures of 15 degrees Celsius (air) and 20 degrees Celsius (asphalt), the legendary Nordschleife was dry throughout and offered perfect grip.

Like Lewis Hamilton and George Russell on their Formula 1™ race weekends, Maro Engel also had to make the best possible use of the hybrid drive’s electrical energy. This is particularly challenging, especially with a track length of more than 20 kilometers. Therefore, it is immensely important to use the right sections of the track to recuperate during braking phases and thus store energy in the batteries again.

To do this, Maro Engel utilized the AMG ONE’s four-stage Energy Flow Control (EFC) system and in some cases deliberately took his foot off the accelerator a little earlier than he normally would. In technical jargon, this is known as “lift and coast”. Preliminary tests in the driving simulator in Affalterbach and on the Nordschleife itself provided the necessary insights, which the team and driver were able to optimally implement for the record lap. In accordance with the specifications of Nürburgring 1927 GmbH & Co KG, the vehicle was tested and documented by TÜV Rheinland to ensure that it was in standard condition. A notary confirmed that the record drive had been carried out correctly.

Fastest street-legal production vehicle
The Mercedes‑AMG Hypercar brings Formula 1™ hybrid-drive technology from the racetrack to the road for the first time. With one combustion engine and four electric motors, the E PERFORMANCE hybrid delivers a total of 782 kW (1,063 hp), with the top speed capped at 352 km/h. The other motorsport technologies range from the carbon monocoque and carbon body to the engine/transmission unit as a stressed member and active aerodynamics to the pushrod chassis. With its complex technology, the two-seater Mercedes‑AMG ONE offers even more than a Formula 1™ racing car in some cases. It features the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with a hybrid-driven rear axle and electrically driven front axle with torque vectoring.

For the record drive, the maximum camber values within the delivery tolerance were selected. Maro Engel selected the “Race Plus” driving program. This results in active, maximum possible aerodynamics, tight chassis tuning, vehicle lowering by 37 mm at the front axle and 30 mm at the rear axle and, of course, full power from all motors. The Drag Reduction System (DRS) is activated by the driver by pressing a button on the steering wheel. This retracts the front louvres on the wings as well as the upper aero element of the two-stage rear wing.

This system reduces drag, which ensures higher speeds on the fast sections of the track. In twisty sections, the aero elements extend again at lightning speed, which provides even more downforce. Maro Engel also found further potential in the operation of the DRS system compared to his first record drive, in order to realize the capabilities of the AMG hypercar even more perfectly.

AMG ONE customers can take advantage of all these variation options. This also applies to the MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO tires, which are fitted as standard and were specially developed for the ONE in collaboration with development partner Michelin. The standard AMG ceramic high-performance composite braking system ensures the highest possible deceleration and stability.

E PERFORMANCE hybrid drive from Formula 1™
The E PERFORMANCE hybrid drive of the Mercedes‑AMG ONE comes directly from Formula 1™ and has been realized in close cooperation with the experts at Mercedes‑AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth. It consists of a highly integrated and intelligently networked unit comprising one hybrid, turbocharged combustion engine with a total of four electric motors. One has been integrated into the turbocharger, another has been installed directly on the combustion engine with a link to the crankshaft and the two remaining motors drive the front wheels.

The 1.6-litre V6 hybrid petrol engine with electrically assisted single-turbocharging corresponds in its technology to the current Formula 1™ power unit. The four overhead camshafts are driven by spur gears. To achieve high engine speeds, the mechanical valve springs have been replaced by pneumatic valve springs. The engine, mounted in mid-engine position in front of the rear axle, revs up to 11,000 rpm. However, for longer durability and the use of commercial super plus petrol, it deliberately stays below the F1 rev limit.

Lightning-fast response with electric turbocharger
The high-revving power unit is boosted by a high-tech turbocharger. The exhaust gas turbine and compressor turbine are positioned at a distance from each other and connected by a shaft. This allows a lower installation position for the turbocharger. On the shaft is an approx. 90 kW electric motor. Electronically controlled, this drives the turbocharger shaft directly, accelerating the compressor wheel up to 100,000 rpm before the exhaust gas flow takes over. The Formula ™ designation for this unit is MGU-H (Motor Generator Unit Heat).

The major advantage: the response improves significantly, immediately from idle speed (when the exhaust flow is still weak) across the entire rev range. The 1.6-litre V6 engine responds even more spontaneously to accelerator pedal commands, while the overall driving experience is highly dynamic. In addition, the electrification of the exhaust gas turbocharger enables higher torque at low engine speeds. This also increases agility and optimizes acceleration. Even when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator or brakes, the technology is able to maintain boost pressure at all times. This ensures a continuously direct response.

Turbocharger acts as generator
The electric exhaust-gas turbocharger in the Mercedes‑AMG ONE has yet another advantage: it uses part of the surplus energy from the exhaust-gas flow to generate electrical energy as a generator. This is either stored in the high-voltage lithium-ion battery or fed to the electric front axle or the electric motor (MGU‑K= Motor Generator Unit Kinetic) on the combustion engine. The MGU-K has an output of 120 kW, is positioned directly on the combustion engine and is connected to the crankshaft via a spur gear system – another technology that ensures maximum efficiency and performance in Formula 1™.

Turbocharging and direct injection with spray-guided combustion not only enable high power output, but also increase thermodynamic efficiency, thus reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. The high-performance six-cylinder engine has two injection systems. Direct injection delivers the fuel into the combustion chambers at up to 270 bar pressure. This is a multiple process at times and is controlled by the engine management system as required. The additional port injection is needed to achieve the high specific power of the engine and at the same time comply with the exhaust emission limits.

Fully variable all-wheel drive with electrically driven front axle
The two 120-kW electric motors on the front axle reach rotor speeds of up to 50,000 rpm. They are each connected to the front wheels via a reduction gear. The front axle, which is thus driven purely electrically, operates wheel-selectively in each case and thus enables individual torque distribution for particularly high driving dynamics (“torque vectoring”). In addition, the two electric motors also allow the braking energy to be optimally used for recuperation – up to 80% under everyday driving conditions. This energy is stored in the battery and is available for a longer electric range or for more drive performance. Each electric motor is controlled by its own power electronics located in close proximity to the electric motors in the floor assembly.

High Performance Battery with Formula 1™ technology
The lithium-ion energy storage system is also a special Mercedes‑AMG development. Its technology has already proven itself in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team’s Formula 1™ hybrid racing cars under the toughest conditions. The AMG High Performance Battery combines high power that can be called up frequently in succession with low weight to increase overall performance. Added to this are the fast energy draw and the high-power density. This means that during a brisk drive over hilly terrain, for example, drivers can immediately call on the full power potential on uphill stretches, while recuperation is strong when driving downhill.

The arrangement of the battery cells and the cell cooling mirror the Mercedes‑AMG Formula 1™ racing car. For everyday use, however, their number is many times greater in the Mercedes‑AMG ONE. The capacity of 8.4 kWh is sufficient for a purely electric range of 18.1 kilometer. Charging is via alternating current and the integrated 3.7 kW on-board charger. In addition, the battery can be supplied with fresh energy via recuperation or from the combustion engine. The lithium-ion, high-voltage battery and the DC/DC converter supporting and charging the 12-volt onboard electrical system are accommodated in space-saving configuration in the vehicle floor behind the front axle.

Innovative direct cooling of the high-voltage battery
The basis for the high performance of the battery is the innovative direct cooling. A high-tech coolant flows around all the cells and cools them individually. Background: every battery needs a defined temperature for optimum power delivery. If the battery becomes too cold or too hot, it noticeably loses power at times, or has to be regulated to avoid damage if the heat becomes excessive. The even temperature of the battery therefore has a decisive influence on its performance, service life and safety.

The coolant circulates from top to bottom through the entire battery past each cell with the help of a high-performance electric pump and also flows through a heat exchanger attached directly to the battery. The system is designed to ensure even heat distribution in the battery. The result is that the battery is always in a consistent, optimal operating temperature window of 45 degrees Celsius on average – no matter how often it is charged or discharged. It may well be that the average temperature is exceeded when driving at high speeds. The protection mechanisms are therefore configured so that the maximum performance can be obtained from the battery, with the temperature level subsequently lowered by direct cooling.

Only direct cooling makes it possible to use cells with very high-power density. Thanks to this individual solution, the battery system is particularly light and compact. The low weight is also due to the material-saving busbar concept and the lightweight yet strong crash structure of the aluminum housing. It ensures the highest level of safety. Another feature is the high voltage of the drive system, which operates at 800 volts instead of the usual 400 volts. Thanks to the higher voltage levels it is possible to significantly reduce the cable diameters, for example, thereby saving design space and weight.

Intelligent operating strategies for optimum output and efficiency
All in all, the High Performance Plug-in Hybrid Drive System offers numerous intelligent operating strategies that are optimally adapted to different application scenarios. The drive programs range from purely electric operation to a highly dynamic mode (Strat 2), which corresponds to a setting used in Formula 1™ qualifying for the best possible lap times. Despite the high system complexity, the driver will always receive the optimal combination of performance and efficiency, depending on the current requirement.

1 The stated values were determined in accordance with the prescribed WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure) measurement procedure. The ranges given refer to the German market. The energy consumption and CO₂ emissions of a car depend not only on the car’s efficient use of the fuel or energy source, but also on driving style and other non-technical factors.
