IN THE NEWS: LIMITED-EDITION 570-hp Audi R8 Competition to Debut at LA Auto Show

HERNDON, Va., October 28, 2014 – Audi of America announces the debut of the powerful 2015 R8 competition at the upcoming 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. The R8 competition redefines the iconic R8 as the pinnacle of Audi performance with 570 hp and racing-inspired, lightweight matte carbon elements.

“The limited-edition Audi R8 competition is the closest road car to our R8 LMS ultra race car that has won virtually every race around the world,” said Scott Keogh, President, Audi of America. “It is designed for the driving enthusiast and we’re excited to bring 60 units as a limited-edition to the U.S.”

The high-performance R8 competition features a 570hp 5.2L V10 mated exclusively to a seven-speed S tronic and a sport exhaust system with black high-gloss tailpipes. This combination results in a 0-60 mph time of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 199 mph, making it the fastest R8 ever offered.

The R8 competition is engineered to push the limits, sharing the same naturally aspirated V10 FSI engine as the Audi R8 LMS race car which has won Daytona and Nuerburgring 24 hour races as well as all other major GT races around the globe. The award-winning GT-engine represents the pinnacle of durability, requiring its first major service after approximately 13,000 miles under race conditions or approximately one full race season. Competitor engines require a major service after one 24 hour race.

Further enhancing the unmistakable Audi R8 competition design are striking matte carbon exterior elements consisting of a fixed rear spoiler, engine bay, mirror housings, flics, side blades, front spoiler and rear diffusor. The combination of the carbon elements lower the weight of the R8 competition and also provide greater downforce. Gloss black wheels with 305 cross-section rear tires and ceramic brakes with anodized red brake calipers provide a stunning contrast to the matte carbon fiber elements. Inside, drivers will find a matte carbon fiber treatment including the center console and illuminated “R8 competition” door sill inlays. The R8 competition is an Audi exclusive line vehicle, which allows the driver to pair a variety of interior and exterior colors and choose from a selection of wheel finishes for a striking look designed to meet driver needs and tastes.

A total of 60 units will be produced at the R8 production facility in Neckarsulm, Germany. Customers can begin ordering the Audi R8 competition as of early November with deliveries expected as of the beginning of 2015.

Sir Ben Ainslie, Ross Brawn, Paul Hollywood Among Starters in Bonhams London to Brighton Challenge

Great British Bake-Off celebrity baker, Paul Hollywood, will be officially starting the 2014 Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run this Sunday, alongside Olympic legends Sir Ben Ainslie and Sir Steve Redgrave and multiple world-championship wining F1 team boss Ross Brawn. They will be tearing up the red flag on the start line of the run, commemorating the day that motorists could drive without a man walking ahead of them with a red flag and the raising of the speed limit from 4 to 14mph.

Paul will be driving a two-seater 1904 De Dion Bouton powered by a single-cylinder 6hp engine kindly loaned by the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu. “It’s going to be great fun,” commented Paul, “I’ve always wanted to do the Run ever since my granddad used to talk about it, so I’m really looking forward to the journey. I’ve got a real passion for cars and taking this trip with lots of other people who also clearly have a similar passion is going to be something really, really special.”

Paul was delighted to have an opportunity to get to grips with the unusual controls on the De Dion under the expert guidance of Ian Stanfield, Senior Engineer at the National Motor Museum’s restoration workshop. “It’s very different from today’s cars,” said Paul. “You control just about everything with your hands and that takes a bit of getting used to.”

IN THE NEWS: Saleen FOURSIXTEEN All-Electric Performance Sedan Adds Spark to Tesla Model S

The Tesla Model S based Saleen FOURSIXTEEN performance electric car was shown for the first time at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

Purposefully advanced design
From the outside, the FOURSIXTEEN is a harmonious blend of aerodynamic aggressiveness and subtle classiness. Applying the same championship Saleen DNA used over the last three decades, Saleen has created a car that can drive the streets of Monaco and set records at Laguna Seca. From the Saleen crafted front fascia to the carbon fiber rear diffuser, the FOURSIXTEEN aerodynamic design is as inspired as it is functional.

Front aero management vents helps ensure that the Saleen FOURSIXTEEN model maintains a low pressure field as air acceleration increases around the chassis. Assisting the lower aero management is the unique V-shaped hood architecture efficiently directing hot air away from the drivetrain cooling system all while generating valuable downforce across the front section.

The rear fascia design finalizes the aerodynamic system as air moves across the cabin and onto the Saleen designed high-downforce decklid mounted spoiler. Mid-chassis air is directed across the carbon fiber accents stretching between the taillights. Supplying rear wake diffusion is a Saleen diffuser design that boosts aerodynamic downforce capability.

Electrified Performance
Just like the rest of the Saleen lineup, this car is more than just an eye catching aerodynamic package. Propelling the new FOURSIXTEEN is the 3-phase, four pole AC induction motor and copper rotor with the upgraded Saleen drivetrain including an all-new 11.39:1 final gear ratio for quicker acceleration. Also new for the FOURSIXTEEN is a Saleen specific MAXGRIPTM locking differential that allows each wheel to efficiently apply rotational force and maximize traction and grip in performance environments. All of the Saleen engineered driveline components increase efficiencies in torque management, give a track capable throttle response, and provide faster acceleration. Overall the FOURSIXTEEN is a well-balanced vehicle and sounds great too!

Electric motor cooling has also been made more productive from the Saleen high-efficiency drivetrain cooling system. Comprising the system is a larger volume radiator, upsampled cooling fans, and a high-flow water pump to help maintain consistent temperatures in more stressful performance applications.

“Electric drivetrains are unique in that they can generate an incredible amount of torque at zero RPM”, detailed Sven Etzelsberger, VP Advanced Engineering. “Our challenge was really to find methods to manage the energy that is generated by the electric motor and rotor assembly. With the FOURSIXTEEN we have successfully found a comprehensive solution to increase performance and harness power in an efficient manner.”

Suspension
Saleen’s design and engineering teams worked together to ensure a functional suspension that doesn’t sacrifice ride quality. The Saleen specific S4 track-calibrated suspension includes a monotube coilover, which works in conjunction with an S4 sway bar setup to increase cornering agility without sacrificing ride quality. The FOURSIXTEEN suspension system can also be ordered in a fully adjustable configuration, allowing the driver to easily increase stiffness for a day at the track and revert to a more streetable setting with simple adjustments.

The Stability Control System has also undergone a track tested performance enhancement. A software change gives the FOURSIXTEEN better cornering response and drivability by allowing the driver to maintain power as traction and vehicle weight distribution change.

Working together with the stability control software, wheel, tire, and S4 suspension system are the Saleen-specific brakes. The standard brake package in the FOURSIXTEEN include 14” 2-piece aluminum hat vented rotors and multi-piston front calipers with performance brake pads. An optional upgrade is the carbon ceramic disc brake system for maximum braking, cooling, and weight reduction. Saleen designed wheels fill out the wheel openings and add an air of performance luxury. All of this combined with the ZR-spec tires make sure the car will hug the corners, accelerate true in the straights, and stop effortlessly when needed.

Supercar inspired interior
The interior refinements of the Saleen FOURSIXTEEN are abundant. From the handpicked leather palette to the carbon fiber dash accents, the cabin environment is as supercar stylish as it is functionally chic. Starting with the seating, black leather is contrasted by perforated leather accents and Alcantara suede inlays providing a true luxury atmosphere.

“Our theme of an electric four-seat supercar really comes to life with the interior of this car”, said Sean Smith, Design Director. “Our design team spent a lot of time evaluating different materials, fitments, and finishes to accomplish the refined interior design of the FOURSIXTEEN while still keeping the modern sports car inspiration intact. A new center console has also been integrated into the interior redesign. This functional aspect gives the driver and front passenger additional center storage, a personal electronic device pocket, and a much needed cupholder all within arm’s reach.

Continuing the track-inspired exterior enhancements, the front and rear seating have been remolded to produce four full bucket seats complete with added bolstering to create a discerning interior that is fittingly built around the driver and passengers. Marrying the seating design to the rest of the cockpit are the Saleen tailor-made door panels and a full leather-wrapped dash both artistically complimented with hand sewn contrast stitching. The final stroke of interior craftsmanship draws attention to the seat shells which have been color matched to the black leather, creating a dynamic modern feel in the rear cabin.

MSRP for the FOURSIXTEEN model is set to start at $152,000 for the complete vehicle, which includes the base P85Model S sedan. This is priced before existing state and federal EV incentives which can range from $7,500 to $15,000 depending on the buyers state (i.e. A California resident would pay $142,000.00).

Warranties are also included on all new Saleen vehicles, components, and labor. Each newly purchased Saleen FOURSIXTEEN will include a 4-year / 50,000 mile warranty to match the manufacturer backed limited warranty.

PICK OF THE DAY: Pristine One-Owner 8,600-Mile Opel GT

Often referred to as a “Mini Vette,” at least in the US, the Opel GT in fact pre-dates the car to which it’s likened, the C3 “coke-bottle” Corvette, by some three years. It, and the Big Vette, take their styling cues from the Ferrari GTO as well as the Pontiac Banshee show car, but to label the Opel GT as a smaller version of a 300+ horsepower American icon is probably off the mark. This is especially true in that, despite the smaller exterior dimensions, they are about the same inside. Furthermore, “Mini Vette” to some extent discredits the GT for what it is: a comfortable, economical, affordable and fun people’s sports car. In that respect, it is much more Karmann Ghia or Alfa Giulietta than Corvette. They were peppy enough and handling took some getting used to, but was decent. Yet they never earned any credentials in motorsport so were missing that true sport in their sports-carness. On top of that, their relative low price opened them to neglect, not worth restoring. Looking at current values, there is some validity to that. What few Opel GTs come on the market, are typically those that have spent some considerable time in a field or the back of a barn. Most are advertised in such a state or strapped to a flatbed. In any case, their decay would take some rather ambitious restoration. For anyone truly interested in an Opel GT, finding one in original, well-preserved condition is the way to go. This is seemingly a needle in a haystack, yet two such examples have come on the market in the last week. This example is especially unique in that, with the exception of some proper maintenance items, it is completely original through the stewardship of a single loving owner. With just a tick over 8,600 miles on the clock, it is as close to a showroom fresh Opel GT as anyone is likely to find. Its Chrome Yellow is also a nice alternative to the typical red and looks especially smart against the black interior (where later models were white). When taking into account where other German cars of this vintage—and ok, the C3 Corvette too—are headed, the Opel GT may just be the sleeper in the bunch. PICK OF THE DAY: Tidy Low-Mile Alfa Romeo 164 S

Before they pulled out of the US along with parent company Fiat, Alfa Romeo treated us to one of the most sporting sports tourers that have ever been on these shores: the 164. With perhaps the smoothest V6 ever placed under a hood, even the base model’s 183 hp evoked an Italian, quasi-exotic feel that its chief rivals, the Mercedes-Benz E Class and BMW 5 Series, inherently did not have. It’s little wonder that Enzo Ferrari drove an Alfa Romoe 164 as his commuter. The even more sporting 164 S bumped the horsepower to 200 and added electronically adjustable suspension, bolstered leather seating and aerodynamic skirts and spoilers. While the cladding may not be to everyone’s taste, the driving experience was elevated to a level where it could easily be overlooked. Despite front wheel drive, their 50/50 weight distribution made them de facto driver’s cars. As such, Alfa Romeo made a concerted effort to ensure that they could be driven much longer than previous Alfas. Along with galvanized frames and comprehensive rust proofing, they featured a computer controlled engine management system and two-stage valve timing. With proper maintenance, it’s not unheard of that this driver’s car can be driven well past 200,000 miles. When one comes on the market with less than 80,000 miles, it’s worth noting. This example has not only clocked a mere 76,000 miles, but shines with the care its been given over 13 years or so. Interior is original with excellent patina but no wear. Paint looks to be superb with no signs of fading or oxidation. The cleanliness of the engine is a good indicator that it has been well maintained. With the low mileage, critical maintenance issues like timing chain wear, steering leaks and AC motor may or may not have been addressed, but appreciation for the 164 is rising, particularly for the later 24-valve Qs, but this S is reasonably priced for the miles and condition. PICK OF THE DAY: Nicely Preserved Volvo 145

When it was time to replace Volvo’s classic rounded shapes of its Amazon and earlier PV cars, they thought out of the box. Or rather, they created the box, which would become a Volvo hallmark for the next 40 years.  The boxiest of these was its wagon form, the 145. Like the 122S Wagon which preceded it, it was immediately popular for its build quality, safety and cavernous cargo room. In 1971, the 145 was further adored for having a new fuel-injected motor providing a very respectable 135 hp as well as a 4-speed gearbox, now with electronic overdrive. Volvo 145s don’t come on the market very often and those that do are mostly a testament to Volvo’s legendary durability, logging hundreds of thousands of miles and looking the part. This 145 appears to be a remarkably well preserved 90,000-mile example showing some patina in the paint and a leather interior that has been under seat covers for most of its life, thus looking practically new. A fair amount of recent mechanical attention has been given to it as well, making for what could be a very enjoyable car for a very long time. 145s and 245s have long been a favorite of the “hooning” set, but this one deserves to receive the careful preservation it’s been accustomed to. Priced at $4,500, it is a rather attractive package. FORBIDDEN FRUIT: Limited Production Peugeot 208 GTi 30th Unveiled at Goodwood

The 208 GTi 30th delivers a more intense driving sensation enhanced with a new Euro6 1.6-litre THP petrol engine developing 300Nm of torque and maximum power increased to a symbolic 208hp. Mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, it has exceptional traction and efficiency assured through the specification of a Torsen differential, specific suspension and steering settings.The exterior can also be distinguished with an optional paint finish – a coupe franche – where the rear is separated distinctively by a sharp dividing line from which the colours are cleanly divided.

It goes on public display at the next Paris Motor Show in October and will be going on sale in November 2014.

A year after its commercial launch over 10,000 Peugeot 208 GTi Hatchback cars have been produced, confirming the success of the reinterpretation of the GTi icon and the strategy to offer a well-specified, performance sports model from PEUGEOT in the B Segment.

PEUGEOT has left its mark on the history of motor sport and DNA can be found in the genes of the 208 GTi, as in those of the RCZ, and its R version greatly enhanced by PEUGEOT Sport. As Peugeot celebrates 30 years since the original 205 GTi, it is now the turn for the 208 GTi to benefit from the expertise and racing pedigree of the engineers at Peugeot Sport. They have worked to give it a more radical character with what some call ‘extra soul’, in response to expectations by driving enthusiasts to have an authentic product with real capability.

A coherent exclusive signature with a more radical temperament

“The 208 GTi 30th builds on the virtues of a strong identity, great attention to detail and in the style of the 208 GTi, and takes on a more radical and brutish fashion, making the link with the incisive character of its dynamic performance,” Julien Kerlidou – Product Manager 208.

From the outset, the exclusive and more radical temperament shines through with the 208 GTi 30th. The suspension is lowered by 10mm, the track widened by 22mm at the front and 16mm at the rear, and larger wheels are specified giving it a pronounced sports car posture on the road.

The chic bright chrome finishers on the 208 GTi are replaced by matt black on the 208 GTi 30th, giving it a more brutish look. At the front the same treatment is applied to the grille surround, the fog lamp bezels and door mirror shells. From the side, the lowered stance is accentuated by matt black side skirts and wheel arch extensions that cover new 18″ wheels finished with matt black rims. The front wheels house large red PEUGEOT Sport labelled brake calipers. The window trim strip, which finishes with a signature paying homage to the illustrious 205 GTi, is also finished in matt black, while the quarter panel bears a ‘208 GTi 30th logo’. At the rear, the round twin chrome tail pipes ensure the sound of the new engine is fully expressed to enhance the aural driving experience.

Finally, the 208 GTi 30th could only be finished in colours that identify this sporting world. The interpretation uniting the red and black in a two-tone and dual material treatment is innovative and unique. The front is finished in a textured black, contrasting with the new high-gloss red at the rear. The two colours are divided by a sharp oblique straight-cut line (a ‘coupe franche’), as first seen on the Onyx Supercar Concept and reinterpreted on the 308 R and Exalt Concept cars. The 208 GTi 30th will also be available in Pearl White and Ruby Red – historical colours of PEUGEOT GTi cars.

Perfectly consistent with its exterior signature and dynamic character, the interior ambience has a more radical sports character developed for the 208 GTi 30th. The red fading to black finishers on the 208 GTi change to lacquered black. The black door handles with a red line echo the seat belts. High-quality floor mats are trimmed in red, while the front bucket seats are of a form specially developed by PEUGEOT Sport. These seats are trimmed in an exclusive blend of materials, mainly Alcantara, accompanied by black TEP with red stitching and a black dotted mesh pattern with red highlights.

A numbered plate marked ‘208 GTi 30th’ positioned above the courtesy lamp finishes off this limited edition anniversary model.

Unrestrained driving sensations for incisive behaviour on the road

“Based on the 208 GTi, itself already a very effective and well powered car, our ambition was to focus on behaviour on the road, by further increasing its effectiveness. For this we have developed the traction and a potential for more grip, mainly on the front axle. The benefits are essentially in passing speeds, driving sensations and feedback,” Pierre Budar –208 GTi 30th Project Manager.

The sensations begin when taking the wheel of the 208 GTi 30th. For the driver, familiarisation is simple and obvious as is directing the car. The compact steering wheel makes it easy to place the vehicle and enhances driving sensations. The instruments, positioned above the compact steering wheel, are directly in view. This facilitates the reading of information, which becomes instantaneous, without the driver having to take their eyes off the road.

Consistent with its specific dynamic character and pronounced driving sensations, this driving position is ideally complemented by a specific ‘bucket’ seat developed by PEUGEOT Sport. Together with the small wheel, the head-up instruments and feedback from the compact steering and suspension, it allows the driver to be at one with their car.

The new 1.6-litre THP engine, meeting the Euro 6 emissions standard, is fitted with Stop & Start. Its maximum torque is increased to 300Nm and maximum power to 208hp, an immediate reference to the model name. The power and torque are transmitted to the wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox with specific gear ratios, and a Torsen differential – both taken from the RCZ R, allowing the full potential of the vehicle to be exploited.

The ESP and traction control are recalibrated, so as to be less intrusive when driving and to set free the vehicle’s traction and allow the Torsen to operate. The advantage provided by the Torsen and the reduced anti-roll at the front are felt in particular when accelerating in a corner by maintaining tight trajectories, and when braking, with improving stability.

The lowered centre of gravity and redefined suspension geometry (wider track, camber angle, wheel alignment, 0.5’’ wider wheels) and the Michelin Pilot Super Sport 205/40 ZR 18 tyres optimise grip and ensure remarkable road holding.

The steering calibration has also been the subject of much development work, both on a track circuit and on the road. The objective was to obtain a linear level of assistance appropriate for the character of the car, taking account of the effect produced by the Torsen differential.

Associated with new damper settings and spring rates, as well as revised anti-roll, the steering is informative. All together it offers both precision and agility. The 208 GTi 30th can count on a braking system to match the performance achieved, with 323mm diameter and 28mm thick discs at the front and Brembo fixed four-piston calipers.

The sporty temperament of the 208 GTi 30th can also be seen in the figures: 0 to 62mph in 6.5 seconds and standing kilometre in 26.5 seconds. Mid-range acceleration is also of a high level with with 5th gear acceleration from 50 to 70mph possible in 6.0 seconds. Its performance and sharper handling are achieved with efficiency that is unprecedented in the segment, with CO2 emissions of just 125g/km.

The 208 GTi 30th again demonstrates that emotion, sportiness and efficiency are engrained in PEUGEOT’s heritage and genes

 

ON DISPLAY: Production McLaren MSO Bespoke 650S To Debut at Goodwood

Jun 25, 2014 — McLaren Special Operations (MSO) has confirmed production plans for a run of bespoke examples of the McLaren 650S following the strong reaction to the MSO 650S Coupe Concept shown in China earlier this year. Just 50 examples of the MSO 650S will be available globally, available in either a Coupe or Spider bodystyle. The production car will make its global debut, in Spider form, at this summer’s Goodwood Festival of Speed in the Supercar Paddock, and will be seen in action taking part in the famous Hill run.

The bespoke McLaren Special Operations division was launched in 2011, and offers a full personalisation service for McLaren owners. The dedicated division grew out of McLaren’s Customer Care programme, which goes back 20 years to the days of the McLaren F1 roadcar, and continues to look after servicing and maintaining cherished F1s for owners, as well as undertaking personalisation work for all McLaren models.

The MSO 650S carries many of the styling cues over from the original concept, and the team at MSO has worked closely with McLaren Automotive Design Director, Frank Stephenson to further enhance the visual appeal. The exterior of the MSO 650S is fitted with a number of carbon fibre styling upgrades with a satin finish, including extended MSO Side Blades giving a subtle and purposeful look. The three-piece rear bumper includes a carbon fibre centre section, and sits above a more aggressive rear diffuser.

The MSO 650S is available in three paint finishes, specially formulated by the bespoke division of McLaren Automotive, all featuring a heavy metallic content. ‘Papaya Spark’ is the modern twist on the famous McLaren Orange and is joined by ‘Agrigan Black’ and ‘Sarigan Quartz’. ‘Agrigan Black’ is a stylish metallic black with a deep ruby red metallic flake, and featured on the original concept, while ‘Sarigan Quartz’ is a new colour for MSO, being shown for the first time at Goodwood Festival of Speed. It is a vibrant metallic silver with a subtle golden infusion.

The exterior design is finished with a set of Palladium coloured 10-spoke Super Lightweight alloy wheels, with a unique diamond cut effect to the inside edge of each spoke. These wheels save 4 kg over the standard-fit design, and are held in place by lightweight titanium wheel bolts.

Inside the cabin, the MSO 650S is upholstered with carbon black leather and Alcantara®, while the stylish satin lacquered carbon fibre detailing extends throughout the driver and passenger zones. In contrast, a gloss finish has been applied to the air vents and handling and powertrain switchgear on the Active Dynamics Panel. A signature dedication plaque mounted to the MSO-branded carbon fibre sill panel completes the enhancements.

Each one of the 50 MSO 650S models will be delivered with a Frank Stephenson-signed sketch and a luxury MSO branded, leather holdall. Handcrafted from stealth black carbon fibre leather, the weekend bag is fitted with complementing carbon black handles and stitching, and an Alcantara® lining.

Pricing starts at £252,500 for the MSO 650S Coupé and £272,500 for the MSO 650S Spider, with first deliveries due before the end of the year.

This Flint, Michigan-built ’57 Nomad wagon was acquired by the consignor from a gentleman in Idaho during 2005 and retained the original drivetrain. It was given a frame-off restoration to original specifications, including the color scheme, as photo-documented. During the process, the vehicle was dipped and stripped down to the bare metal, all of which was restored with over 680 hours in body and paint alone with no filler used. All of the stainless-steel trim is original, with all dents removed and polished to a chrome-like finish, and the glass is all new. The 283 ‘Power Pack’ small-block V-8 breathes through dual exhaust. This Nomad has been honored with many awards. Covered and stored in a garage, it is only brought out for shows. Peter Denty, a noted restorer of vintage racing cars, restored it in the UK during the winter of 1985 for then-owner Chris Ball, who had relocated to Canada at the and brought the car to North America with him, which he drove to the North American Formula Junior championship in 1986. The Lotus was eventually acquired by Don Denhard, who raced the car at many vintage-racing events, and then sold it circa 2003 to the consignor, who had the car restored from the frame up. The restoration included frame straightening and the rebuilding of the brakes, hydraulics, and steering, plus installation of all new rod ends, front A-arms, and rear radius rods. Steve Jennings overhauled a new Richardson 1,097 cc Ford-Cosworth engine, which is topped by a rebuilt air intake and cold-air box for the twin Weber carburetors matching the unit on the Lotus 22 depicted in William Taylor’s The Lotus Book. A new fuel cell resides inside the original fuel tank. Other new items include the Varley battery, Koni steel shocks, exhaust system, correct vintage-size Dunlop tires, and many other important detail items. Converted in period to Type 22 specification with “layover” engine configuration and all proper detail items, this Lotus 20/22 is an excellent “no excuses” example, offered complete with its FIA Historical Technical Passport issued May 26, 2009 and racing logbook, plus correspondence. A potent and historic single-seat racing car, this Lotus 20/22 marks the most successful “pre-monocoque” racing-car design of the early 1960s.

PICK OF THE DAY: One Owner 79,000-Mile Chevrolet Vega GT Kammback

This is not a story about a ‘74 Vega becoming the next Dino 246GT. Nor is anyone suggesting that we overlook the series of recalls and failures that earned the Vega its rightful place as being one of the all-time crappiest of crap cars. This isn’t a Cosworth Vega, with its twin-cam fuel injected all-alluminum engine. It’s not a more relaible, better appointed later model. This is a simple 1974 Vega Kammback with GT trim. Yet it’s been pampered as though it were a six-figure LS6 Chevelle. Paint shines without any evidence of a respray and no signs of rust. Interior has been kept as new thanks to seat covers that look as though they were put on shortly after the car was bought. Carpets appear to have very little wear. Glass and brightwork don’t appear to have any pitting or other blemishes. There’s an awkward coolness to the Kammback’s styling; like it’s begging for a surfboard or carbon-fibre road bike to be placed upon it, if for no other reason than to be parked in front of the brewpub for conversation. In the end, this is about the very essence of this car love thing: that even a very basic crap car, when given love and exceptional preservation—by a single owner through 40 years—can be elevated into something… desirable?  Find it here on Craigslist in Santa Clara CA for $4,600.
