Famous for bringing together legendary air-cooled Porsche feature cars, the tenth anniversary of the Luftgekühlt event series lands at the Universal Studios Backlot on October 5, 2024. Visitors can expect an incredible lineup of rare sports cars and racing machines, with one of the undeniable stars being the 1971 Martini Racing Porsche 917K from the Miles Collier Collections at Revs Institute in Naples, FL.
Campaigned by Martini Racing Team in 1971, chassis #019 has been preserved in the same unrestored condition as when it finished the Spa 1000km race. This 917K (Kurzheck or short tail) competed in both the 1970 and ’71 seasons, racing with Porsche Salzburg during its first year before passing to the Martini RacingTeam. As such, chassis #019 played its part in claiming the International Championship for Makes for Porsche in both 1970 and ’71.
During 1971, Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennep drove the car on three occasions but failed to finish the Daytona’s 24 Hours following a crash with third driver Rudi Lins at the wheel. At the Monza 1000km it retired with a broken throttle linkage before an engine failure ended its final race at Spa.
Chassis #019 was powered by a 4907cc flat-12 air-cooled, fuel injected engine, which developed 600hp in a car that weighed 1760 lb. Attendees at Luft 10 will be able to experience the sound of the 917K’s evocative 12-cylinder engine during the “Moment of Power” scheduled to happen during the event.
Vehicle info
Alongside its hero cars, Luft 10 will showcase hundreds of air-cooled Porsches handpicked from the registered attendees by the Luftgekühlt team. These stunning machines will be displayed throughout the Universal Studios Backlot, adding even more excitement to the visitor experience.
Information on each vehicle will again be available via the Bramo app (for IOS and Android), which visitors can download and then scan the unique QR code on each vehicle. The app will reveal information shared by the owner on the car’s story and specifications, making it available to the broader enthusiast community. Not able to attend?
