IN THE NEWS: Mercedes-Benz Entering Pickup Market

79467mer_vans

Before the end of the decade, Mercedes-Benz will expand its product range into a promising segment by launching the first pickup from a premium manufacturer. Thanks to their versatility, all-round utility, and payload of around one metric ton, pickups are popular across the world and thus have good sales potential.

“The Mercedes-Benz pickup will contribute nicely to our global growth targets,” says Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Division. “We will enter this segment with our distinctive brand identity and all of the vehicle attributes that are typical of the brand with regard to safety, comfort, powertrains, and value.”

Volker Mornhinweg, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, adds: “As part of our ‘Mercedes-Benz Vans goes global’ strategy, the pickup is the ideal vehicle for the international expansion of our product range with a newly developed model.”

A promising segment with global scope

The midsize pickup segment is currently undergoing a transformation worldwide. More and more pickups are being used for private purposes, and commercial as well as private users are increasingly asking for vehicles that have car-like specifications.

Mercedes-Benz is the first premium manufacturer to respond to this market shift by developing its own pickup. A similar example was the successful introduction of the M-Class around 20 years ago. As the first sport utility vehicle (SUV) from a premium manufacturer, the M-Class completely redefined the segment.

The new Mercedes-Benz pickup will initially be targeted at markets in Latin America, South Africa, Australia, and Europe, all of which are posting sustained growth in this segment.

Mercedes-Benz Vans: Centre of competence for commercially and privately used vehicles

The Mercedes-Benz Vans division is responsible for the new vehicle. With its many years of experience in developing, manufacturing, and marketing vehicles that are used commercially as well as privately, Mercedes-Benz Vans is ideally suited to enter the midsize pickup segment and launch a Mercedes-Benz pickup on the market for the first time in the company’s history. Current models such as the V-Class and the Vito demonstrate that Mercedes-Benz Vans has the high level of expertise to successfully serve customers from a wide variety of private and commercial sectors.

“We can perfectly serve customers looking for a vehicle that offers a high level of utility and at the same time has the comfort, safety, and design of a Mercedes-Benz passenger car,” says Mornhinweg. “We will design our brand’s first pickup according to this recipe for success.”

ON THE BLOCK: The $2,000,000 Amelia Island Challenge

If you’ve watched or participated in any of the /DRIVE eBay challenges on YouTube, you know how this works. In this case, your Petrolhead Godmother just plopped $2,000,000 USD in your lap to spend as you like at this weekend’s auctions during the Amelia Island Concours d”Elegance. Using the auction companies’ HIGH estimates, pick one or pick several cars (no motorbikes or automobilia) that you would like to haul home. We’ll get started:

From Bonhams – Thursday, March 12

Lot 118 — 1962 Austin Healey 3000 MK II BT7 2+2
Estimate $50,000-$60,000
UPDATE: SOLD FOR $51,700 including premium
image

In recent years, Big Healeys have gone through a bit of a downturn after a sharp rise in the mid- to late-2000s. Within the last year or so, the market has caught up. It appears now to have made the corrections and adjustments such that they’re realistically priced, vis à vis a Series 1 E-Type on one end of the spectrum and say an MGB at the other. Among the Austin Healey 3000 MKs, many find the middle-gen MK II the most appealing, particularly in the 2+2 BT7 configuration. The MK II had the shortest production run and was an ideal bridge between the rawness of the MK I’s triple carburetors, along with a classic oval dash, and the MK III’s refinements (roll-up windows and a wraparound windscreen). This example radiates its British Roadster-ness, with the Old English White paint over Red interior. It is said to have had a thorough restoration in the late 2000s (just as the market flattened) and reports to be an excellent performer with a strong motor and 4-speed overdrive gearbox. Bonhams estimate of $50-60K is right on the money.

Lot 168 — 1912 Peerless Model 60 Runabout
Estimate $250,000-$350,000
UPDATE: SOLD FOR $440,000 including premium
image2

It may be the type of car that we pursue only when someone dumps $2M in our laps (or we have a discretionary $350,000 laying around), but given such an event, a Peerless Runabout would certainly be one to go after. Among its superlatives are first to offer electric headlamps, first to offer an electric starter, and, in the case of the Model 60 presented here, most cubic inches ever stuffed under an American-made hood (824). The Peerless Model 60 was arguably the fastest thing on the road in the Brass Era. This example was resto-mod’ed in the ‘60s. In that process, some liberties were taken to improve the car’s drivability. These include a shortened chassis, as well as modified steering and brakes, along with coachwork enhancements that give it the Runabout appearance of a 45-hp Model 32 whilst retaining the 66-hp 13.5-liter lump. So while not original, it is a gorgeous representation of motoring’s earliest days and carries with it some notable provenance.

Lot 021 — 1977 Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina
Estimate $175,000-$225,000
UPDATE SOLD FOR $192,500 including premium
1977_Ferrari_308GTB

Less than a decade ago, the predecessor of the iconic Ferrari 308 GTB, the 246 GT, wasn’t even considered a real Ferrari, with its “entry-level” Dino badging. Ever since, many of us have sat by helpless as their values have increased ten-fold in that time. As those at the very highest echelons of automotive investing have often pondered what the next 250 GTO might be (the answer: the 250 GTO is the next 250 GTO), the broader masses are wondering whether the 308 will follow its progenitor toward the half-million dollar mark. This isn’t a science and there are no formulas and even less guarantees, but it does stand to reason. Specifically, the first to get there would likely be one of the early lightweight 308 GTBs, whose bodies were made of GRP fiberglass, or vetroresina. Only 712 were made before other weight savings allowed for steel bodies that were close to the Vetroresina’s overall weight. At last summer’s Silverstone Classic, a steel bodied, targa-roof, wet-sump 1979 308 GTS set a world record at £82,225 (around $124,500 USD). A much rarer glass GTB should do considerably better. Offered without Reserve.

Lot 24 — 1987 Lamborghini Contact 5000 QV
Estimate $425,000-$475,000
UPDATE: HIGH BID $375,000
1987_Lambo_Countach

With early examples of the Lamborghini LP 400 Countach “Periscopa” now fetching seven figures, logic would have it that later generations will follow suit, at least to some degree. The most likely candidate would be the 25th Anniversary editions of 1988, but on the heels of those would be the 48-valve Countach 5000 QV (quattrovalvole). Only 610 of these bulls were built. This one looks to be especially unique in its Pearl White finish and Ivory interior. Furthermore, most of them were ordered with the optional rear wing whereas the owner of this one (who owned it until 2014) opted to retain the original lines of the LP 400, complemented by swapping the gruesome US-mandated bumpers with the svelte ones it was designed to have. With a fresh service, it is described in “as new” mechanical condition. The quintessential bedroom poster car of the ’80s, this Countach might be a relative bargain at its high estimate of $475,000.

Lot 024 — 1976 Alpine A110
Estimate $100,000-$140,000
UPDATE: SOLD FOR $88,000 including premium
1976_Alpine_A110

When the name Alpine is mentioned in automotive circles, the vast majority of people—at least those of us in the US—think of car stereos. Even among enthusiasts, many consider Alpine—the car—to be a Renault sports/GT. Alpine (pronounced AL-peen-UH), however was an independent manufacturer that outfitted their chassis and fiberglass bodies with, primarily, Renault drivetrains until being bought out by Renault in 1973. Shortly thereafter, Alpine Renault gained notoriety in motorsport by winning the inaugural World Rally Championship with a competition-spec A110. Although they never reached the same level of success in competition, the rally inspiration carried through until the end of the A110’s run in 1977 (replaced by the edgier A310). This included the French Racing Blue livery, racing seats and auxiliary lights. This example comes from its penultimate year and is equipped exactly as such. On a purely objective basis, the Alpine A110 can be seen as a poor man’s Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera RS. What it lacks in raw horsepower, it makes up for with its uniqueness and French charm. Okay, maybe not entirely but it is a lightweight rear-engined production car-turned motorsport-turned production car for about half the cost of the RS Carrera. And, should the Nissan GTR-based Alpine A110-50 come to be, there could be a new appreciation for a distinguished brand. Offered without Reserve.

Lot 034 — 1934 Packard Eight 1101 Coupé Roadster
Estimate $180,000-$220,000
UPDATE: SOLD FOR $143,000 including premium
1934_Packard_Eight

The Packard Eight was the right car at the wrong time. The absolute worst time. By the time of the 11th Series (Packard did not follow model-year convention) at the end of 1933, the US was just beginning to emerge—but still deeply in—the Great Depression. The American consumer was struggling to buy bread and while there was plenty of wealth at the opposite end of the scale, those customers had much more exclusive Duesenbergs and Rolls-Royces to consider. Those in the middle that could afford a new car were flocking to the Ford V8, costing more than five times less (granted, far less creature comforts as well). The Packard Eight simply couldn’t find a significant market. For this reason alone, it deserves a place in a collection today. This 1101 Coupé Roadster (complete with rumble seat) remains remarkably original, never in need of total restoration, though it did have some high-quality reconditioning at various times in its life. It has a known owner history and has been exceptionally cared for. At roughly 10% of comparable Duesie or Rolls money, this Packard Eight is a delightful example of ’30s luxury. Offered without reserve.

Lot 126 – 1934 Bentley 312-Litre Drophead Coupé
Estimate $275,000-$375,000
UPDATE: SOLD FOR $231,000 including premium
1934_Benltey_DHC

While Packard and Duesenberg represented what an American car should be in 1934, Rolls-Royce and the then recently acquired Bentley Motors represented the peak of the European automotive landscape (much as they do today). Where the Packard was about comfort, strength, durability, and sheer mass, the Bentley was, as E.W. Hives, the 312-Litre’s principal designer in Derby put it, “to be driven fast with safety or will tour without fuss and noise.” While any Derby Bentley is special, this particular 312-Litre is that much more so for being largely bespoke for its initial owner, a Mr. M.S. Spencer-Naim. Mr. Naim ordered a three-position cabriolet body to be built by Thrupp and Maberly, as well as a unique speedometer-clock cluster and shortened steering column and gear lever. After serving in WWII, Mr. Naim returned to growing family and regrettably sold Chassis B75BL to R.E. Merchant who was its steward until 1984, when it was sold to Howard Brown of California. Mr. Brown intended to do a bare-metal repaint, but sadly died before it was complete. Mr. Brown’s wife sold it to its current owner who completed the repaint, along with new carpets, replaced wood and new wheel discs. With only four passionate owners, it’s no surprise that it retains an extraordinary documented history, including log books, build sheets and the original owner’s handbook that have been issued by Bentley Motor Cars, and the service file, which dates back to 1953. This is a car that lends itself perfectly to historic tours and/or concours, from club events to the international stage. For roughly new Continental GTC Speed money, this Bentley has million dollar looks and a priceless history.

Lot 197 — 1952 Mercedes-Benz 220 Cabriolet A
Estimate $150,000-$200,000
UPDATE: SOLD FOR $286,000 including premium
1952_MB_220

On its own, this is a stunning example of a rare pre-SL Mercedes-Benz sports-tourer. Although not a pure sports car legend like the 300 SL Roadster, production numbers are significantly lower for the 220 Cabriolet A (the ‘A’ being two seats plus a “kinder,” whilst the ‘B’ had a full four seats). Only 1,278 were sold (vs. 1,858 SL Roadsters). Its 2.2-litre inline six, with its innovative “oversquare” architecture (shorter stroke than bore dimension), was to become a stalwart Mercedes-Benz power plant well into the ’70s while its rich leathers, carpeting and wood never allow its occupants to forget that they are in a Mercedes-Benz. With only 20 miles since an older restoration, this one looks as new with exceptional paint and fresh interior. The custom fitted luggage and Telefunken radio are also a nice touch. By itself, easily worth the $200,000 high estimate, but as a complement to the Bentley we bought earlier (Lot 126), it is an absolute must-have.

Our spree totals $2,045,000. Yes, its over, but we’ll err on the side of excess when spending the Petrolhead Godmother’s money. Let us know what your picks are in comments.

Update: March 15, 2015 – Out three-auction, three-day total came to $1,432,200. This leaves us with over $500,000 to close a deal on the 1988 Lamborghini Countach 5000 QV, the only no-sale of our picks. At the end of bidding, auctioneer Charlie Ross announced that its high bid of $375,000 was “very close.”

Bargain of the Day honors, if one can call them that, belong to our Bentley 31⁄2-Litre which sold below its catalogue estimate for $231,000 including premium.

ON THE BLOCK: What to Watch Mecum Kissimmee 2015 – Saturday January 17

Lot K2 – 1972 Mercedes-Benz 280 SEL 4.5
moto+match estimate: $15,000
UPDATE: Sold for $17,500
FL0115-201634_1

A recent spike in the value of the W108 saloons has brought them out in droves. But not all are quality examples. Some have succumbed to rust; others simply tired. Here is a very presentable 280 SEL with the 4.5-litre V8 that has excellent paint, glass, chrome and interior. It’s what one would expect of a 42,000-mile car. Some will appreciate the resistance to swap out the hubcaps steel wheels for the Bundt alloys, while others will appreciate a more modern (Becker) CD-based head unit. A timeless, classic big benz that can be enjoyed while a sound investment.

Lots K4, K5, K6, K7 – A Quartet of Low-Mileage Mercedes Benz 107s
moto+match estimate: $18,000-$35,000
UPDATE: Lot K4 – High bid at $43,000; Lot K5 – Sold for $40,000; Lot K5 – Sold for $22,000; Lot K6 – Sold for $13,500
MB_R107s

The Mercedes-Benz 107 has had its ups and downs and, for the moment anyway, it seems to have settled at a reasonable level whereby higher-mileage driver quality examples can still be had for $10,000 or less while outstanding examples command outstanding prices. Here we have four of the latter. With the highest mileage car of the bunch (Lot K6 – 1986 560 SL) clocking just over 30,000 miles and two other 560 SLs yet to turn a fifth digit, it will be curious to see if this trio and its one-year-only fixed roof 380 SLC (with just over 20,000 miles) spur new interest in these look-rich-cheap classics.

Lot K26 – 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL
moto+match estimate: $95,000
UPDATE: High bid of $90,000
FL0115-201658_1

The Spring and Monterey auctions were very kind to the W121 190 SL. It’s not hard to see why. Bearing a familiar resemblance to the 300 SL, which is now in seven figures, this smaller, more “everyday” roadster exudes grace and style but with a definite sporting character. Its 1.9-liter four-cylinder won’t set any Nurburgring records, but, mated to its 4-speed manual gearbox, is more than capable along B roads on the way to brunch at the Club. We’ll have to see if Kissimmee as as favorable a venue as Monterey or Amelia, but they’re on a good wave. There likely won’t be many more opportunities to catch it before they chase their bigger sibling into the stratosphere.

Lot K99 – 1982 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ43
moto+match estimate: $35,000
UDATE: High bid of $35,000
FL0115-209901_1

In a departure from the Mercedes-Benz parade, here’s something completely different but equally interesting. Unique among the Toyota FJ Land Cruisers is the mid-length FJ/BJ43. It’s longer than the Jeep-sized FJ40 that most of us are familiar, but not as long as the Troop Carriers. Even more unique is that most 43s were 2B- or 2H-diesel powered. Though never available through US dealers. a few have made their way up from Central and South America. This one appears to have undergone a high-quality restoration and while not entirely original, its modifications likely won’t detract from its crew among Land Cruiser enthusiasts. The vintage Land Cruiser market has tempered somewhat after a mid-2000s frenzy, but rare and well-sorted examples will always have an audience. It’s not unusual to see restored-to-showroom US-model FJ40s with the later-year (1980-1983) options like power steering and air conditioning (which imports like this FJ43 did not come with) reach or surpass the $50,000 mark. It’s unlikely this has the same kind of appreciation, but its rarity should attract some interest.

Lot K252 – 1969 Ford Torino Talladega
moto+match estimate: $45,000

talladega

The Ford Talladega was built over a very short period of time in early 1969 homologation special based on Ford’s Torino-based NASCAR entry that year. In total, only around 750 were built; just about a hundred more than the coveted Hemi ‘Cuda. On the track, the Superbirds and Daytonas obliterated them. In the aftermath, the Talladega faded into a near-obscure contender existence. At its heart though is a 428 Cobra Jet lump that Ford claims puts out 335 hp, but this was from the day when Ford and their Detroit counterparts would grossly understate horsepower figures. This is the same motor that propelled the Boss 429 to grail status among blue-chip collectors, but has largely remained overlooked in the Talladega, despite its more direct racing lineage. Not that long ago, a decent Talladega could be found for around $30,000. In the past year or so, its rarity and that motor have seen it climb sharply and there’s every indication it will continue to do so. While the automatic gearbox in this car will undoubtedly hold it back, it’s a very well sorted and documented example of Ford muscle car history.

ON THE BLOCK: Rare Right-Hand-Drive Mercedes-Benz 280 SE Cabriolet Featured at Silverstone NEC Sale

1970 Mercedes 280SE 3 5 Cabriolet

One of the rarest Mercedes’ ever produced, a 1970 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet, will be offered in Silverstone Auctions’ sale at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show on the 15th of November. This car, estimated at between £200,000 and £250,000, is a right-hand drive floor mounted automatic, the rarest of all the variants and one of just 68 produced.

When the model was lanced in the early 1970s many people believed Mercedes had created the finest automobile in the world. For those who preferred the open air, and had the money to pay for it, there was no finer choice than the 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet. It featured a powerful 3.5-litre V8 and was the fastest, most sumptuous and most expensive convertible that money could buy at a Mercedes-Benz dealership.

Purchased by the current vendor in the UK 11 years ago it was then exported to Australia. Since then the car has lived a privileged existence.  It was then entrusted to expert and marque restoration specialists Sleeping Beauties in Brisbane for what would be a five year, $200,000 plus restoration.

Commenting on the beautiful car, classic car specialist and general manager of Silverstone Auctions, Guy Lees-Milne, said: “This is a beautiful example of the car many regard as one of the finest in the world. Rarely do we see a car that has had this level of care and attention lavished on it.”

Following this restoration the car was scored at 95.5 out of 100 by the owner, who himself owns one of the world’s largest restoration companies. It was then sent it to his own facility for more extensive work with the instructions “make it as good if not better than the way it came from the factory”. The car is now presented in concours condition to match the best in the world.

“Not only is this a rare and expertly restored classic car but could prove a fantastic investment. Prices for the more abundant left-hand drive model have topped $425,000 recently,” Guy added.

For more details on the car or Silverstone Auctions’ two-day sale, taking place at the NEC, Birmingham, please visit http://www.silverstoneauctions.com/1970-mercedes-280se-35-cabriolet-1-of-66-right-hand-drive.

ON THE LAWN: Mercedes-Benz Showcases Past and Present at Pebble Beach

IMG_2510

Pebble Beach, CA – Mercedes-Benz will showcase its long tradition of history and innovation at the 64th Annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance from August 14-17, 2014 with a display of vintage, modern and futuristic coupes.  As the ultimate expression of luxury, coupes have always held strong emotional appeal with owners and brand aficionados alike.

Mercedes-Benz will display significant coupes from the past as well as the world debut of the 2015 S65 AMG Coupe.  Marking a return to the S-Class nameplate for large coupes, this model is the ultimate version of the newly-expanded S-Class model range, featuring a 12-cylinder biturbo engine producing an astounding 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque.  The S65 AMG Coupe will make its showroom debut in late 2014.  On display at the Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge, the one-of-a-kind Concept Coupe SUV will make its U.S. public debut.

Mercedes-Benz Classic will also showcase the one-off 540K Streamliner coupe.  Following an extensive restoration and reconstruction, this extraordinary vehicle dating from 1938 will celebrate its international public premiere.  Developed in a wind tunnel, this exceptional vehicle features a powerful supercharged engine for high-speed long-distance motoring and a unique, lightweight aluminum bodyshell.   The 540K Streamliner will participate in the Tour d’Elegance on Thursday, August 14 followed by an exhibition at the Concours d’Elegance on Sunday, August 17.

Another theme of this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is the French Grand Prix of 1914.  On July 4, 1914, Mercedes-Benz celebrated an epic one-two-three victory near Lyon.  The three remaining examples of this legendary race car will be reunited in a specially created judging class, including the winning vehicle from 1914.  The Grand Prix cars come from the collections of George Wingard, the Collier Collection and the Mercedes-Benz Classic.

Offering a glimpse into the future, the Concept Coupe SUV celebrates the long-standing coupe tradition at Mercedes-Benz with a flowing side line, stretched greenhouse and bold radiator grille.  At the same time, the Concept Coupe SUV stands out with its muscular proportions, large wheel arches, 22-inch wheels, high beltline and generous ground clearance.

PICK OF THE DAY: Pampered Mercedes-Benz 250 SE Coupé

00Q0Q_1J1y64CT6dX_600x450

There are few cars that evoke the kind of refined establishment as the Mercedes-Benz W111 Heckflosse Coupé and Cabriolet. With its traditional grille, cathedral headlamps and subtle tail fins, combined with the individuality of its two-door body, it’s a car that even today turns heads to see who might be behind the wheel. At the top of the chain are the 280 se 3.5 Cabriolets, with values rocketing nearly 40% within the last year. While the fixed roof coupés aren’t in that sort of investment category—at least not yet—they offer most of the same panache, albeit without the St. Tropez vibe. More importantly, they do it for about 20% of what it would take to get into a 3.5 Cab. This example is a mid-generation 250 SE. The 250 SE, sandwiched between the early 220 SEb and the 280 SE, featured some driver-oriented improvements to it predecessor with a very capable 150-hp motor, four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. As such it would be an ideal entry in a vintage rally, such as this weekend’s Northwest Classic Rally. It is said to have been garaged and pampered, with an extensive amount of reconditioning since 2008. It has had a color change over a rust-free body. It isn’t original, but looks very smart over its handsome Dark Red interior, which seller discloses needs some minor cosmetic flaws addressed. Excellent maintenance on its 78,000-mile drivetrain certainly add to its adeptness as a quality driver’s car. Find it here on Craigslist in Great Falls VA for $33,000.

IN THE NEWS: Mercedes-Benz Unleashes 621-hp S65 AMG Coupé

2015 S65 AMG Coupe (11)

July 14, 2014. Affalterbach. The S65 AMG Coupe is the new twelve-cylinder top-of-the- range model in the S-Class Coupe series. Unique drive comfort, benchmark performance and exquisite appointments are all hallmarks of this stuning new two-door. The irresistible contours of the V12 Coupe are accentuated by a host of expressive design elements in high-sheen chrome. The AMG 6.0- litre V12 biturbo engine, with an output of 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, is unique in its segment, as is the AMG sports suspension, based on MAGIC BODY CONTROL with curve tilting function and ROAD SURFACE SCAN.

Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: “There are AMG fans for whom our V12 biturbo engine is the measure of all things. For this clientele we have developed a unique car in the form of the new S65 AMG Coupe. From driving dynamics to comfort and equipment – our new twelve-cylinder coupe surpasses even the highest of expectations.”

Mercedes-AMG’s unique range and long V12 tradition

Coupe, Sedan and Roadster: following the S65 AMG and the SL 65 AMG, the new S65 AMG Coupe is the third AMG high-performance car with a V12 engine to come to the United States market. Globally, no other car manufacturer in the world offers such a wide portfolio of twelve-cylinder vehicles as Mercedes-AMG. In 2003, the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz presented a coupe with a powerful V12 biturbo engine in the form of the CL65 AMG (C215 model series). Its successor, the CL65 AMG (C216 model series) was available between 2007 and 2014 and was the direct predecessor to the new S65 AMG Coupe.

Key data at a glance:

Twelve-cylinder engines are still considered the pinnacle of engine design. Among connoisseurs the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine in particular is seen as an outstanding example of its type. Open the hood of the S65 AMG Coupe, and it is immediately obvious why. The exclusive carbon fibre/aluminium engine cover is synonymous with the exceptional strengths of the V12 engine that is built in Affalterbach according to the “one man, one engine” principle. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative precision and production quality, the AMG engine plate bearing the master engine builder’s signature is also a clear testament to the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance brand.

A sensational drive and effortlessly superior performance

The AMG V12 delivers a peak output of 621 hp and a maximum torque of 738 lb-ft – resulting in effortlessly superior performance. The S65 AMG Coupe accelerates from 0-60 mph in 4.0 seconds and has a top speed of 186 mph (electronically limited). In other respects, the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine assures a sensational drive. Stylish drive comfort, tremendous pulling power and effortless power delivery in all speed ranges are coupled with refined engine running characteristics and the distinctive typical sound of the AMG V12.

Power transmission with three individual driving modes

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC is responsible for transmitting power to the rear axle. The transmission offers three individual modes: the driver can choose between Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S) and Manual (M) by pushing a button on the center console. Sport and Manual emphasize the vehicle’s dynamic pedigree. The ultimate emotional appeal and tangible sportiness are ensured by the brief, precisely defined cutback of ignition and injection when shifting up a gear under full load. This shortens shift times and lends an audibly more emotive tone to gearshifts. The ECO start/stop function is activated in transmission mode “C”.

Lithium-ion battery reduces weight by over 44 lbs

The S65 AMG Coupe features a lithium-Ion battery as standard equipment. This innovative technology offers numerous advantages over a conventional battery concept. With a capacity of 78 Ah, the lithium-ion battery replaces both the starter battery and the backup battery – resulting in a weight saving of over 44 lbs.

AMG sports suspension with curve tilting function

The AMG sports suspension based on MAGIC BODY CONTROL delivers an incomparable driving sensation. The standard combination of Active Body Control (ABC), ROAD SURFACE SCAN and curve tilting function is unique. This function allows the S65 AMG Coupe to lean into bends in a manner similar to a motorcyclist or skier. The lateral acceleration acting on the occupants is similar to driving on a banked curve. On country roads in particular, the curve tilting function heightens motoring enjoyment and comfort. The object is not to reach higher cornering speeds, but to produce an even more pleasant motoring experience. The curve tilting function can be selected as one of three drive modes using the ABC switch, and it is active in the speed range from 10 to 111 mph.

On bends the vehicle leans into the turn automatically and continuously in fractions of a second – depending on the curve radius and vehicle speed. The innovative suspension system detects curves using both a stereo camera behind the windscreen, registering the curvature of the road up to approximately 50 feet ahead, and an additional lateral acceleration sensor. The curve tilting function is making its United States debut in the S65 AMG Coupe.

ROAD SURFACE SCAN is a technology that can detect surface undulations in advance with the help of a stereo camera. MAGIC BODY CONTROL then adjusts the suspension in advance to suit the situation, effectively compensating for irritating chassis movement. Both suspension modes – “Comfort” and “Sport” – are also available here. In addition the AMG sports suspension, the S65 AMG Coupe features specific elastokinematics – the driver therefore benefits from more directness with a dynamic driving style.

Speed-sensitive sports steering with variable steering ratio

The electromechanical speed-sensitive sports steering with variable steering ratio perfectly complements the sophisticated suspension technology by optimizing vehicle handling and agility while maintaining driving safety at high speeds. In “Comfort” suspension mode, the speed-sensitive sports steering enhances comfort by providing more steering assistance. If the “Sport” suspension setting is selected, the driver feels a stiffer and more commanding level of steering assistance. The pre-programmed curves for power assistance enhance feedback from the road surface and steering precision.

Polished forged wheels with fully integrated wheel bolt cover

The S65 AMG Coupe features forged wheels in a multi-spoke design, size 8.5 x 20 at the front and 9.5 x 20 at the rear, with 255/40 R 20 and 285/35 R 20 tires. The exclusive forged wheels of the V12 Coupe fascinate with their exceptional design that represents a contemporary interpretation of the classic sports car rims. Each of the 16 spokes twists so that the light-catching contours radiate to the center of the wheel hub. The ultimate effect is that the wheel gives the impression of being even bigger.

The matchless visual superiority of the ceramically polished, high-sheen AMG forged wheels is the result of an elaborate finishing process. Initial polishing is followed by manual grinding of the light-alloy wheels. Two polishing stages using different polishing compounds ensure the desired deep sheen. Having been cleaned, the wheels then undergo final treatment, including final clear coat sealing.

The forged wheels feature a high-quality, screw-on, fully integrated wheel bolt cover in forged aluminium. Its shape is reminiscent of a center lock as seen in motorsport. The AMG lettering is incorporated into the rim as a design element. Additional forged wheels are available as optional alternatives – one design variant features a matte black finish and high-sheen rim flange.

Optional ceramic high-performance compound brake system

The AMG high-performance compound brake system features brake callipers with a grey finish. Red callipers are also available, and a ceramic high- performance compound brake system is optional. This design, which is more than 20 percent lighter than its conventional counterpart, ensures lower unsprung masses as well as enhanced driving dynamics, agility, ride comfort, and brake performance.

Design: irresistible contours, lavishly accentuated with chrome

Supreme sportiness combined with the sensual clarity typical of Mercedes-Benz – the irresistible contours of the S65 AMG Coupe are a captivating sight. V12- specific features include the countless design elements in high-sheen chrome at the front, sides and rear which are particularly effective in conjunction with dark paintwork. The large central Mercedes star on the front apron, the “twin blade” radiator grille, all of the air intake grilles, the trim strip on the “A-wing”, the side flics (air deflector elements) and the front splitter are chromed-trimmed. The three-dimensional front splitter increases downforce at the front axle, while the gap above the front splitter ensures an effective flow of air to the separate engine oil cooler behind it.

At the side, the eye is drawn to the “V12 BITURBO” lettering on the wings and the high-sheen chrome inserts in the side skirts which harmonize perfectly with the high-sheen polished forged wheels. The rear view is also unmistakable. The AMG sports exhaust system’s two chromed twin tailpipes in V12 design are integrated into the rear apron. Above the distinctive diffuser insert, painted in high-gloss black, the trim element forms an effective contrast. It echoes the design of the “A-wings” on the front apron and is finished in high-sheen chrome.

Interior: equipment, quality and ambience of the highest standard

The extraordinary character is also evident on the inside. The S65 AMG Coupe welcomes its occupants with an incomparably exquisite ambience. This two- door features the finest materials, the highest manufacturing quality and an extensive range of standard equipment. In visual terms, the interior is dominated by the sports seats. The upholstery in designo AMG Exclusive Nappa leather with seat upholstery layout in a diamond-pattern design boasts delineated perforations which ensure beautiful harmony between perforations and stylistic stiching. The result is exceptionally neat seams and an unrivalled impression of quality.

Exclusively developed AMG sports seats ensure optimal long-distance comfort. Electric adjustment, memory function, seat heating and climate control are standard features. More contoured seat cushions and backrests improve lateral support when cornering at speed. High-quality AMG badges are prominently displayed on all four backrests, and the AMG crest is embossed on the front centre console.

Other features of the exclusive package include the Nappa leather roof liner, a leather-lined dashboard, door center panels in a diamond-pattern design, leather-clad roof grab handles, chromed door pins and AMG stainless steel door sill panels illuminated in white. Customers ordering designo AMG Exclusive Nappa leather upholstery are able to choose between black, porcelain/espresso brown, saddle brown/black and crystal grey/black.

New sports steering wheel in a three-spoke design

The new three-spoke sports steering wheel allows perfect vehicle control. It features shift paddles, a distinctly contoured rim trimmed with perforated leather in the grip area, and a metal insert featuring AMG lettering.

Another typical AMG speciality is the AMG instrument cluster. Information on the engine speed, vehicle speed and much more appears on two animated round dials on the 12.2 inch, high-resolution colour TFT display. The typography, the needles in red/silver, the speedometer with its 220 mph scale and the “V12 BITURBO” lettering in the rev counter all have a distinctive AMG look. When the driver’s door is opened, an AMG start-up screen appears on the right-hand display, while an animated S65 AMG Coupe appears in the instrument cluster.

Extensive standard equipment with head-up display and touchpad

The extensive range of standard equipment for the S65 AMG Coupe includes the head-up display and the touchpad. The head-up display projects key information such as the vehicle speed, speed limits, navigation directions, traffic signs and information from DISTRONIC PLUS onto the windscreen. The visualization of the engine speed and the current gear is exclusive to AMG. In manual transmission mode, a colored upshift bar and the possible gears for a manual gear change are also projected onto the windscreen. The virtual colour display, measuring 8 x 2.75 inch, appears to hover above the hood at a distance of around two meters from the driver. The innovative Mercedes-Benz touchpad makes it significantly easier to operate the radio, telephone and navigation system. In contrast to conventional systems, the touchpad can be used to operate all of the infotainment functions. The input area is approximately 2.5 x 1.7 inches in size and is integrated into the handrest with a cover for the keypad.

Intelligent Drive: new standards in safety

The S65 AMG Coupe also sets new standards in terms of active and passive safety. What began with PRE-SAFE® ten years ago and continued with DISTRONIC PLUS is now leading to a new dimension in driving. Comfort and safety have merged into one. Mercedes-Benz calls this Intelligent Drive. Ground-breaking systems make the new S-Class Coupe even more comfortable and safe.

Standard equipment for the S65 AMG Coupe includes (selection):

  •  360° camera
  • Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC
  • Burmester® high-end 3D surround sound system
  •  Driving Assistance package Plus, including DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist, PRE-SAFE® Brake, BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and PRE-SAFE® PLUS
  • Upholstery in AMG Exclusive nappa leather

IN THE NEWS: Mercedes-Benz Announces New Generation CLS (Still Not a Coupé)

14C472_167

Mercedes-Benz founded the four-door coupe segment ten years ago with the CLS, thus underlining its leading role in automotive design. The CLS combined for the first time the elegance of a coupe with the comfort and functionality of a sedan. It was also the first vehicle to offer dynamic LED High Performance headlamps as an option, turning it into the lighting icon. The CLS Coupe has long since established itself as a style icon with particular charisma, and will also continue to be unique in its segment.

Prof Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development: “With the CLS Coupe and the CLS Shooting Brake we have built design icons which also set the pulse racing faster in their latest incarnation courtesy  of their enthralling lines. With new high-tech ingredients such as the innovative MULTIBEAM LED headlamps which start a new chapter in lighting design, the nine-speed automatic transmission or the progressive multimedia system, both models also define new cutting-edge technology.”

The scintillating design of the CLS-Class with its exciting proportions has been subtly adapted to high-tech aspirations. It steadfastly remains a compelling proposition with its long hood, narrow window line with frameless side windows and dynamically downwards sloping roof.

Overall the design of the latest generation of the CLS Coupe comes across even more dynamic. This is thanks to a new, expressive chrome diamond radiator grille, a striking front bumper  with large air intakes and slightly darkened tail lights.

New dimensions in lighting systems

Both models now come as standard with all-LED headlamps in a new design. Alternatively both vehicle models are available as an option with the new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps as designed and developed by Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Benz is opening a new chapter in lighting systems with this innovation. Since the MULTIBEAM LED technology combines the very best of today’s lighting technologies and can optimally adjust the light distribution instantly and automatically to virtually any traffic situation, it always ensures thus far unrivalled broad and bright illumination of the road surface and edge of the roadway for high performance and precision without dazzling other car drivers.

In addition to the camera on the windshield, this new lighting system uses four control units per vehicle, which calculate the ideal light pattern 100 times per second and control all 24 high-performance LEDs in each precision LED
module quickly and individually. Each LED is dimmable in 255 stages.

New MULTIBEAM LED headlamps provide exceptionally fast and precise, anti- dazzle continuous main beam and light up the road surface and its edges much more brightly in many situations.

Best visibility on bends and in curves

As well as the high-performance, precision LED module, each MULTIBEAM LED headlamp also features a module for the low-beam headlamp, which can be swivelled outwards  by up to twelve degrees. This provides an active light function, which is also camera-controlled, with unprecedented characteristics. For instance, it offers a preview function which already swivels the active light function when the driver has yet not turned the wheels. Thus it provides optimum illumination of the bend early on. The active light function already swivels back to the straight-ahead position before the end of the bend
according to the particular situation. This allows the driver to identify dangers earlier when entering and exiting bends. The anticipatory control allows an additional range of between 30 and 60 metres depending on the traffic situation.

The curve light is also unique, which activates the cornering light function modules on the left and right before entering a roundabout in order to provide the best visibility on all sides at an early stage. The navigation system provides the headlamps with details of the locations of roundabouts along the route.

Sporty interior with contemporary luxury

Ample space, unadorned, sporty elegance, perfect craftsmanship and high- quality materials exert the stylistic influence on the interior of the CLS family. The new generation reinforces this impression by emphasising sportiness, exclusivity and functionality even more.

The new color display in the head unit with its 8 inch (20.3 cm) screen adds to the state-of-the-art feel and will help define the dashboard’s contemporary looks. Other new features include a redesigned three-spoke sports steering wheel and a host of exquisite details which underscore the interior’s high quality both in visual and tactile terms. The central control panel in the center console has four instead of the previous two buttons, thus requiring fewer operating steps in many cases. Five attractive interior  colors and six trim finishes will be available and offer a host of potential individualization options.

Efficient, sporty engines

The CLS400 houses a new 3.0L V6 bi-turbo engine which delivers an impressive 329 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. The CLS550 has a 4.6L bi-turbo V8 engine with power outputs of 402 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque.

New automatic transmission with nine gears

Cutting-edge technology also comes in the shape of the world’s first 9-speed automatic transmission with hydrodynamic torque converter in the premium segment. This innovation builds on the strengths of the previous 7-speed automatic transmission which set the benchmark in terms of efficiency, comfort and dynamism. With nine forward gears this new transmission reduces  fuel consumption while further enhancing shift comfort and agility. The CLS550 rear-wheel drive will be the first to offer this new transmission, with the other models receiving it later.

Hallmark Mercedes high level of safety

To make top-class safety available for everyone, the CLS-Class will in future be fitted with a host of new assistance systems along with existing systems with upgraded functionality. Standard-fit features include the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS, which can help prevent rear-end collisions – if necessary through autonomous braking.

The state-of-the-art assistance systems from the E-Class and S-Class can also be fitted as an option. These include DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist, BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, PRE-SAFE® Brake with pedestrian detection, PRE-SAFE® PLUS, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC including lateral parking manoeuvers and a 360° camera.

Optimum connectivity

A completely new multimedia generation will offer intuitive operation in the CLS Coupe, including elaborate  animations and visual effects which present all the functions in a clear and highly attractive manner.

The Audio 20 CD or optional COMAND Online infotainment systems are available in combination with the new 8-inch color display in the head unit. Both enable the internet to be surfed without restrictions when the vehicle is stationary. The prerequisite is a Bluetooth®-capable mobile phone with data option. Also standard is an integrated media interface to connect an iPod® and iPhone®.

In conjunction with COMAND Online, Mercedes-Benz Apps such as Weather, GoogleTM Local Search with StreetView and Panoramio, destination/route download and Facebook are now all offered. Audio and video playback is possible from various sources, e.g. via Bluetooth®, from the Apple iPod® and iPhone®, from SD card, USB stick or CD/DVD.

Modern-style navigation

Another new offering with the CLS facelift is the user-friendly Garmin® MAP PILOT navigation system, which comes standard on the CLS400. Its strengths include 3D views with exact representation of streets and buildings and photo- realistic junction and lane assistants. The navigation  software and the map data are stored on an SD card, which is simply inserted in the dedicated slot of the Audio 20 CD with preparation for the Garmin® MAP PILOT.

Standard on the CLS550 is the COMAND Online with fast 3D hard-disc navigation, topographical map display, photo-realistic 3D buildings and 3D map rotations as well as display of NASA satellite images provides a decidedly sensuous experience. System features include an animated compass and display of Google Maps on the head unit. The navigation system can also provide real-time information about the situation on the roads when it receives its traffic data in COMAND Online via the internet by means of the Live Traffic Information service.

Telephony via Bluetooth® with HD Voice capability as standard

The basic Audio 20 CD system and COMAND Online both support HD Voice- capable basic telephony, which connects the mobile phone to the vehicle via a standardized Bluetooth® interface. HD Voice provides much better voice quality. In conjunction with convenience telephony the high-speed LTE network can also be used in future if a compatible smartphone with a relevant contract is used.

The US market will launch with the following 2015 models in the fall of 2014. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.

PICK OF THE DAY: Pristine 34,000 Mile Mercedes-Benz 300 CD

00e0e_fBHKv5IihiT_600x450

Imagine walking into a Mercedes-Benz showroom in 1985. There sits before you a handsome coupé with a turbo-diesel motor in the popular-at-the-time 877 Blue-Green Metallic over Beige Tex. By now, the stalwart 3-litre five cylinder diesel motor has already gained legendary status, but placed in this two-door pillarless variant of the W123 chassis, it takes on a completely new purpose. This, in its turbo-charged form, combined with the sporty aesthetic, is the world’s first diesel-powered performance touring 2+2. This is the same basic motor that in 1978 broke nine different diesel and gas speed records, averaging nearly 15 MPG at over 195 MPH through 12 hours. Furthermore, the 300 CD was so impeccably engineered, that in its styling, it lost nothing in structural integrity, its Mercedes-Benzness. Naturally, you’re sold. Jump ahead to 2014 and after 29 years as the sole owner, it’s time to sell. Despite limited production, a 300 CD coming on the market is nothing extraordinary. As the designers and engineers intended, most are still on the road and somehow managed to skip over the period where they looked tired, such that they seamlessly went from modern to classic. A 300 CD, like any of the Mercedes-Benz diesels, can clock literally millions of miles, thus it’s certainly not extraordinary to find nice examples with 250,000 miles or more. What is extraordinary is that the very same Blue-Green over Beige 300CD that lured its owner on that showroom in 1985 looks exactly the same as it did then. With only 34,000 miles, it’s not hard to imagine why. Original paint appears flawless as does the interior. Even the floor mats look like they’ve had nary a soled shoe placed upon them. Everything including the original Becker radio and all power accessories, such as windows and sunroof, are said to be working perfectly. The owner states that it has been meticulously maintained and there’s surely no reason to doubt that. The attention to detail in its preservation is evident in every sense, including all its original documents, such as the 1985 brochure, from the original sale. Perfection has its price with this one priced double of what a 100,000-mile example would go for and several thousand over Hagerty’s high value. This however, is clearly one of those that is hors categorie. Its condition and mileage might be better compared to a late-model E or CLK Class coupé, except that this, in 1985, was the last two-door diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz we would see on these shores. Hors categorie indeed. Find it here on Craigslist in Seattle WA for $22,500.
